Was all about SEX?? Why would ANY man want to MARRY so many women just to have sex? Especially when all that sex led to all those kids, more mouths to feed?
Do you honestly think that rich and powerful men, then and now, think anything BUT sex when they take a mistress? Do you think that, back in the 19th century, those men took responsibility for their "mistakes"?
That's probably why so many men took their female slaves, because any children that resulted would simply be sold into slavery.
Why can't people just think that plural marriage was done for altruistic reasons?

Mr. danger, you are putting 21st century standards and practices on something that happened over 100 years ago. Another poster was right in that back then, women didn't have the rights and priviledges we have today. They WERE more dependant on their men; if not a father or brother, then husband.
Polygamy as practiced by those in Utah and Arizona is not how it was back in the 19th century. Several of Brigham Young's wives were older than he was. And as far as I know, only TWO of Joseph Smith's "wives" were under 18, and one of those he never consummated the marriage. I don't know that there are records of others under 18 by anyone else.

starsha, in the Middle east, polygamy has nothing to do with the laws that keep women oppressed. Even single wives and unmarried women are treated like crap. And any non-Muslim woman is a whore and a prostitute. ANY non-Muslim woman is a whore and a prostitute.

I think its because most people are searching for any thing to hate. The truth is some thing that pricks their heart. They do any thing to avoid facing their guilt. including attempting to destroy the very elect of God. people also judge history with a "here and now" morals,laws,and the concept of winners are right in history.
why should the people of Missouri think that their extermination edict was anything but just? Why did they allow it to remain on the law books till recent times? where's the reparation payments the hollow apologies? no Governor boggs was correct in signing that law. them damn Mormons were clogging the political system with their righteous morals.....and their distaste for brothels! wait a minute did I just say brothels....these same men, who so vehemently later opposed the idea of plural marriages as a way to care for widowed females(females w/ no rights, no ability to own property have money,vote, have control of their children,females who depended on a man to live), visited and supported brothels even picked political candidates on the bases that the supported this carnality? hmmmmm ...
Polygamy was the one thing that differentiates Mormons from other Christians,something which happened a long time ago, practised in a country which was not yet part of the united states and not under us law. But I hear people, all the time, who tell Mormons what they believe and tell Mormons that polygamy is wrong cause its against the law..... Apparently Mormons still practise polygamy....or so my neighbour tells me.
The things Mormon haters hold on to as sacred truths are mostly lies with a particle of truth. It makes their lies a bit more palatable.

The sin of lust, one women is never enough. It does not matter if you can take care of the women or not all that matters is the next fix, lust is like a drug, and women become the next fix, women become like a needle, so as many women as can be marriade and collected the better, Remember King solomon with 300 wives. Thats some lust problem, sure he had the money to take care of them, but back then in the mormon days and even today, I still see polygamy and a belief in it as a sexist thing. I served in the war and the women over there are treated like crap, so uf you think that polygamy is going to bring you freedom and peace, you are wrong.
A women must be escorted by a male, going anywhere
she cannot drive by herself
she must walk two paces behind a male
she can be shot by her husband, if he suspects that she is cheating on him...no proof is needed
a husband tells her how much she will cover up
women and men are seperated in pblic
men always go first
men will try to walk thru you if you do not get out of the way

Because it was about sex. A man can do the right thing and provide for his deceased brother's widow and family or his best friend's widow and family without marrying the widow. That would be an altruistic act on his part.
That's not what happened ; These men married these widows ,the marriages were consummated and I have no reason to believe that sex was not a normal part of their marital life.
That changes what may have been an altruistic act to an opportunistic act.
One of the many reasons for opposing polygamy as it is currently practiced is that
older guys are taking advantage of very young women by" marrying" them ; that's opportunistic.

Clearly, they're just trying to be politically correct. If they were to continue to all the beliefs that they ever had from the beginning, they'd sure as heck get their religion banned. So, they change their beliefs in accordance to the law. For instance, black people used to be discriminated by Mormons, because they believed them to be the descendants of Cain; "But oh wait", thought the Mormons, "the civil rights movement just happened! If we keep all this discrimination up, we'll be arrested!" So one Mormon had a great idea. "I know, let's just say that we had a religious revelation, and that now black people are allowed to become Mormons!" Problem solved. The same has been done for polygamy (for areas in which it is prohibited)

The ONLY reason I would go for having multiple wives is for the sexual benefits. Why else would any man want to deal with the drama of more than one woman.
Despite what your Mormon leaders have told you, polygamy for Joseph Smith and Brigham Young was highly motivated by sex. It's also the motivation for that Warren Jeffs guy, the fundamentalist that got arrested.. Cult leaders in general, use their power to obtain sex. The polygamy thing was brilliant because they were able to use bible passages and revelations from God to proclaim that it was the thing to do.

Because some people have notions of true love. And they believe that true love means you love one person, and that its that one person in which they want to spend your life with. Especially in today's society. Polygamy may be illegal in the United States, but that's not stopping some people from getting multiple partners. They just don't marry up. And to have many spouses means that you have to divide up your love, and some people believe that love cannot be divided up (at least, not in a relationship anyway) in such a manner.
And today's society's all about sex. Sex this. Sex that. Sex on TV. Sex on the Internet. Sex in video games even. Sex is advocated so much by so many, that it has become widely accepted as the norm. People have sex just to do it, not for the love they have in their partner. And so when people think of polygamy, they think its all for sex, because one can't possibly divide up their love amongst different people, but still get to experience the thrill of sex, among different people, and not be condemned for it.

I've got a question. Why would a man in this day and age WANT multiple women in his house, all bound to him all pmsing at the same time, all mad at him for forgetting an aniversary? Women now a days tend to be stronger of will and are not the type to keep it sweet like those women who are on compounds involved with polygamy are told. I doubt you would be able to beat us into submission and I doubt even more that you would be able to beat one of us and have the sister wives look on and do nothing.
I'd beat a man with a skillet before I let him bring a hand down on me or my family.

(And no, even in the 19th century I do not believe it was for altruistic reasons. What reason would be so good that it would trump God's commands against adultery?)

Why do you even care. According to you, the mormons no longer practice plural marriage. (Although, they do practice eternal polygamy).
Joseph Smith was off traveling all the time. Do you really think he had time to take care of his 30 some odd wives?
He just wanted to bang them when it was convenient for him.
