You should consider if you prefer to walk out to your backyard from a kitchen, a kitchen at the back would be more convenient for BBQ'ing, for serving dinner on the patio, for high traffic or dirty feet coming in from the yard, for gardening.
these are things to consider.

What a good question Sarah.Women spend a lot of time in the kitchen>i guess it would depend on the person.I think It would be neat to have the kitchen at the front, providing it still afforded some privacy. But if the children and family are kitchen dwellers, then at the back would be best.As an alternative why not in the middle?

it depends on the type of home you have.
my home that I built, the kitchen was straight up the steps from the front door. It was an open floor plan which helped the flow of traffic.
From the top of the steps I went left, I was in the living room, if I went right I was down the hall and into the rest of the top floor rooms. A pantry area was built to seperate the LR from the DR area since I had vaulted ceilings.
If I went straight through the kitchen/ dining room area I was on my back patio.
Many homes have the kitchen dining room in the back where they drive up and all of the heavy traffic does not come through the front door to soil the floors or interrupt company.
The kitchen should be where you feel the piping should accomodate the most effeciency for sharing uses of running water pipes and drains. You also need good traffic flow, proper lighting, and privacy. The rest will work out for you.

A kitchen should be situated close to the dining room as well as the outdoor entertaining area. You don't want to grill something and then have to walk all the way across the house to the kitchen or go back and forth long distances from the kitchen to the other eating areas. Plan for convenience and an easy flowing traffic pattern from the kitchen to the dining room and outdoor area.

Consider the following:
1] do you keep your kitchen neat at all times ? front works
2] do you like to keep an eye on kids in the front or back [ where will they be playing ]?
3] which side ot the house is hotter in the late afternoon, when you are making dinner? don't go there

I live in a rancher, the kitchen is in the back,I had to put in a shade tree because of the afternoon heat, just for the kitchen window.I would have liked the dining room and kitchen switched with the living room and covered porch, just because of how the property/sun position works.Would have been more private too.

Definatley in the back. I mean I wouldn't want people to come in my house and BOOM there's the kitchen- its not really a welcoming room. Now if the kitchen was upstairs (like some are in my neighborhood) I'd have it in the front.
