Paul was born in Tarsus, a prominent city of Cilicia. (Ac 21:39; 22:3) His parents were Hebrews and evidently adhered to the Pharisaic branch of Judaism. (Ac 23:6; Php 3:5) He was a Roman citizen from birth (Ac 22:28), his father having perhaps been granted citizenship for services rendered. Paul probably learned the trade of tentmaker from his father. (Ac 18:3) But, at Jerusalem, he received instruction from the learned Pharisee Gamaliel, suggesting that Paul was from a prominent family. (Ac 22:3; 5:34)

He was a Jew who held Roman citiizenship.
Philippians 3:4 though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; 6 as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness, under the law blameless.
Acts 22:25 But when they had stretched him out for the whips, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, "Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?" 26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the tribune and said to him, "What are you about to do? For this man is a Roman citizen." 27 So the tribune came and said to him, "Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?" And he said, "Yes." 28 The tribune answered, "I bought this citizenship for a large sum." Paul said, "But I am a citizen by birth."

Citizens of Rome carried a medalion, with the Emporers image on it. It was like a free pass, or a get out of jail free card. The Christians of Judea forced Paul into a position where he had to accept his fate in Judea, or use the authority of a Pagan. In doing so, he started a chain of events that caused the authority of the Church to leave Judea. The Temple was torn down, the people were scattered.
That coin, or medalion would be a relic of monumental stature.

Rob, the book of Acts covers Saul/Paul from chapter 7 onward.
You can read his own testimony in 2 Corinthians; which I highly recommend you read in it's entirety. but, it gets focused on Paul's personal testimony in chapter 10 and 11 onward.

Paul was a roman citizen, born one actually, that is merely his nationality. Judaism was his religion, as well as his race. Latter he had a psychotic episode, and became a christian.
Sorry for the pot shot. Not very sorry mind you, but sorry ;)
