Your dogs can become seriously ill from ticks and fleas. It sounds like they are infested and may need medical attention.

Keep your grass cut short. That cuts down on ticks. Make sure that you get medication for your dogs so they never get that bad again. There is Frontline you can use.

Ticks can commonly be found in tall grasses. You say though that there are hundreds on the floor when the dog comes in though. Ticks will not leave the host until they are full, and they wouldn't be present in those numbers.
I'm thinking the problem may be fleas. You can try a shampoo that has tea tree oil in it. Also consider using a product like Frontline or Advantage. Stay away from the supermarket brands. Some of these products have been known to cause seizures so watch your dog after application.

Ticks are usually a problem where there is high grass or wooded areas. Are you sure they are ticks? I have never heard of hundreds of ticks on an animal just from being let outside. Frontline plus is an excellent product for use on your pet but if you have an tick infestation of the magnitude that you are stating I think I would call in an professional exterminator. Don't forget that you and your family can become ill from tick bites as well.

I'll try to help. I got rid of them completely in my yard. They are usually in tall grass or weeds, or in the dirt where it is cool like under the house. Check where your dogs lay most of the time. Thats where they usually are. Get your dogs dipped in a good tick dip that leaves a residual. Treat the areas and yard with diazinon granualsor something similar. I had chickens loose on the property. I never fed them. They would eat all the bugs. They LOVE ticks! They will peck and scratch for them. It didn't take too long and I had no more ticks.

K9 Advantix or Frontline Plus on the dogs. Regular Frontline or Advantage only works on fleas.
Spray the yard with a pesticide (check your lawn and garden department and read the labels.)
Ticks like tall grass (mow the lawn short) bushes and trees. They use these as launching pads to hitch a ride on most any warm-blooded critter that happens by.
Chickens, geese, Guinea hens are very effective tick eaters, but you may not live where you can own those?

frontline from the vet is the best product made for this problem. if they have ticks they probably have fleas and tapeworms too.
know the weight of your dogs and you can buy everything you need from the vet without an appointment.
the pills to get rid of tapeworms can only be purchased from a vet.
the products sold at places like walmart or pet stores do not work. you might as well toss your money out the window.

You really need to get the tick/flea protection and put in on every month. Get the dogs to the vet now, ticks kill. Do something now, this is serious.

Try to keep them out of the long grass and areas that are wet with alot of shrubs and weeds. Try using revolution or frontline they help to keep ticks minimized. Mostly though, keep you dogs out of areas that are wild and untamed. Walking on sidewalks and roadways this time of year is a good answer or sandy areas.

Are they ticks or fleas?

Go to Lowes and buy a bag for lawn pests... should include fleas and ticks.
