people are made of of three items:

1. Body
2. Spirit - Breath of Life
3. Makes a Soul

just like a Box.

1. Wood
2. Nails
3. makes a Box

What happens when you take the nails out of the wood? The Box disappears.

Same as when the spirit leaves the body, the soul disappears. the Soul is you. the Spirit, or Breath of life, goes back to the life giver - God of Heaven, sorry, that is not you that goes right away :( just the breath of life. the body goes back to where it came from, the dirt of earth, well most of it. Some bones just don´t disappear, they tend to stick around for a while.

I am telling you what i Believe, not forcing you to believe the way i do. its just my opinion :)

OK, now,
When Jesus comes again, he will bring the Breath of Life with him to reintroduce to all the bodies that are laying around, underground, in the oceans, or where ever they may be. when the Breath of Live is reintroduced, ( like the Nails back in to the Wood ) the Soul ( Box ) reappears :) and you are Whole again :)

I asked a preacher a similar question once, and this is how it was explained to me. It sounded better then any other explanation i have ever heard. well, i asked a lot of preachers a question like this, and this answer is the one i liked the best and is the one i give out when i am asked :)

I really hope i have helped

Okay, the body is just the same as an animal's in the fact that when it dies it just goes back to the earth it was made from, but there is a spirit in man that distinguishes us from the animals. At the time of death that spirit will go back to God. U've heard of out of body experiences? Well, apparently the spirit can hang around for a while just before it returns to God. It often happens to soldiers who have been severely injured and the spirit will temporarily leave the body and maybe go home. But if he begins to recover the spirit goes back to the body. It happens to people on the operating table and similar places too. When the spirit re-enters the body it must just be it's not that person's time to die. When a person does die, the spirit returns to God and He keeps it in the Book of Life (not a literal book) to await resurrection. Every person who has ever lived and died will be resurrected and given a chance to live God's way of life. What an awesome thought! I can't wait!

The truth is we are 3 in one...spirit, soul, and body. when we die the spirit that God gave us goes back to him. Our body breaks down and rots whether we are cremated (the ashes deteriorate) or disposed of some other way. The question has always been what of the soul. The spirit is of God and is our connection to Him. The body is our outer covering and serves us in communicating with the world. Our soul is where our will, desires, and personality is housed. It is the real you. If you have accepted Jesus Christ's sacrifice of dying for your sins in your place at the cross, raising again on the third day, and allowing for you to become a child of God your soul goes to Heaven also. If not, your soul goes to hell and eventually to the lake of fire. Life comes from God and we are made in His image. He is 3 in one also..Father,Son and Holy Spirit. Biologically we know that life comes from life...the Law of Bio-genesis.God is the source of all life and apart from Him is no life. If we have arranged to be with Him through Christ we will live with Him forever. If not we are doomed to hell in a perpetual state of death and suffering forever.

Answering rationally to your question let me set some premises:

1. We as in our physical body is made out of the five basic elements of nature, namely - Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Sky.
2. We as in the 'one' using this body is an energy which is a part of the larger energy of the cosmos.

Death is defined as the ceasing of bodily functioning which is brought about by the energy source leaving the body.

Now when we die or our body ceases to function, the five elements from which it is formed, merge with the respective elements in nature through the process of decomposition.

The energy part of us leaves the physical confines of a body and is released in the atmosphere where it joins the energy of the cosmos. Hence the energy of the cosmos is balanced. energy neither created nor destroyed just changed its form to a visible entity to a non-visible entity.

the how and why of the energy source in us leaves the physical body to cause death is a different issue altogether to be answered in a different question.

Hope this is helpful.

mike m:
In all sincerity, I can tell you that the Holy Bible (when read without pre-concieved ideas), tell us, that those "billions and billions" you have made reference to, simply have gone to the grave, and dissipated into mere dust [dirt], awaiting for the return of Jesus Christ, to this earth to come and resurrect them back, to life, again, (see: Book of John, Chapter 5, verses 28 & 29). When Jesus commences his return to earth , firstly, the "dead in Christ " [Christians] will rise out from the grave to join Him. Next; the non-christians (non-believers) will be resurrected to life. ( see: First book of Thessolonians, chapter 4 verses 14 - 17). Paul, the Apostle had plenty to say on this topic, concerning the resurrection of all humans from the grave. (see The First Book of Corinthians, Chapter 15, verses 12 - 23; and also, verses 51 & 52 ... no memtion of those "asleep" [dead] going to "heaven" nor "hell" upon dying. Paul talks about a resurrection from the grave at Christ's return to the earth. The Book of Revelation equally supports Paul's positon (see: Revelation, Chapter 20, verses 5 & 6).
The concepts of either, "going to heaven" or "going to hell" upon death, are born out of ancient Egyptian and Greek mythology, of humans having "immortal souls" - only Jesus Christ has immortality - not humans (see: Book of First Timothy, chapter 6, verse 16). Fear religion was used by each culture respectively, to control the masses with and this concept was later, adopted into the Roman Catholic church, albeit, unwittingly, as some bad theology. The Holy Bible does not support these non-plausible doctrines. Check it out.

in Ecclesiastes it is written the dead no nothing. that means once a person died and burried it is considered the person is sleeping or having a rest. no activity done or anything else. when Jesus come thats the time the righteious dead will rise up and ready to meet him, but the wicked people they will rise after 1000 years where in JEsus will come down with the righteous people.

Firstly you must determine who or what YOU are.
An ego; a spirit, a soul, a brain having some electrical activity; what?
You can follow and believe in stories about The Invisible Sky Critter in The Goat Herders' Guide to the Galaxy or you can realise when you die, the lights go out and "that's all folks".
No matter how anyone spins it there is absolutely no reason/evidence for believing in any version of Invisible Sky Critter.
Your ONLY reason for being here is to procreate but if, like me, you choose not to procreate you'll make up other reasons to keep on living ... till the lights go out.
There's just no getting away from those lights going out; sorry to burst your bubble.

Logically, we "go" to wherever we were before we were born. We didn't exist then, and we don't exist after we die. Hard to imagine, which is why religions always have a nice, understandable story about it--but that doesn't change what really does happen, which is you just stop existing. You won't be able to worry about it; you will have no consciousness.

The dead go to the common grave where they sleep in death awaiting a resurrection. In Hebrew it is called Sheol. In Greek it is called Hades. Sometimes, people translate Hades to Hell.

Even if you do not believe in resurrections, death is the absence of life. Not the opposite of it, but the absence of life. Dead people do not exist. They ceased to exist at death and in this state there is no consciousness so there is no pain; neither is there any pleasure. There is nothing.

You do not go to some place...you go to some one. What happens after that, no one really knows for sure. All the worlds religions have a slightly different answer for those who believe.

As someone who has a personal relationship with God without having the constraints of a particular religion, I know He exists...and I know that he walks with me on a daily basis 24/7. Death to me is simply the extension of my relationship with Him without having the physical restraints of the body.

For those that do not believe in Him or have a personal relationship with Him, I don't know where their final resting place will be. Perhaps He will recycle their spirits to give them another chance. As I said, no one, including me really knows for sure.

I realize that this is not the rational answer you were seeking, but it is what my creator has put in my heart to tell you. May he walk with you also.
