I'm seventeen years old and I am in a year round school program where I am required to work 6 hours per day and I have to finish all the textbook work (usually 500+pages) in three weeks, and then the cycle starts out all over again. I am now working at Ralphs and all that I have to say is that the pay is horrible and I'm on my feet all day bagging groceries and pushing around shopping carts. I'm too tired to do my homework after work; It's impossible to do anything else there since you can only work as a courtesy clerk if you're a minor. Then I start college in August (I'm a part-time college student and a high school student). My dad has just retired and I will be getting $500 a month. I only get paid $100 a week at Ralphs... not to mention once I sign with the Union (you have to, it's mandatory), they take out $30 from your paycheck, so I might be getting $70 a week. What should I do?

It's my dream to work at a tanning salon, lol; I just hate being out in the sun.

I think your mom is right. You are underpaid and overworked with your classes etc. Life is too short and you have the rest of your life to work so let up a little now and concentrate on your schooling.

If you are required to work, won't quitting put you in jeopardy with your school program? I suppose you could try to find another job, but that would only take more time out of your busy schedule, and since you are starting college in August, I suggest you stick it out for a few more weeks, and then see what other opportunities suit you and your new schedule better. Best of luck, whatever you choose!

Look for a student job at the college - work/study or general position as they are designed with students in mind- even in the plant maintenence department, plus their may be an employee discount for studying reducing your expenditures for school. With Ralphs - give them proper notice - this will help you in your future even if you have worked only a short time -

First it is always easier to find a job when you are already working.

Go to your local employment center and have them help you create a truly great resume, cover letter and get your references in order.

Then hit the road and find a job you will like better. Consider a part-time job where you will only have to work a few shift a week. Like two school nights and either Sat or Sun.

It sounds like you don't like your job and it is preventing you from putting good effort into your school work. If you mom and dad are willing to support you, take advantage of that so you can concentrate on your school work. Once you turn 18, many more jobs open up for you, so you can choose a job that is better suited to you. In the meantime, focus on school and follow your mom's advice. Quit the job.

Well, why don't u quit Ralph's, and apply for a job at a tanning salon, like Darque tan, or something u had in mind, that way maybe u will have time to study.

If you are only working part time, you shouldn't have to sign with an union. Also forcing someone to sign with an union is illegal. Report whoever is telling you that you have to sign with the union to the State Department.

Yeah...sounds like you already want to quit. Just continue to be responsible and find a new job first before you leave.
