80% of the population have had or will have a cold sore. Refrain from letting your 1 year old from kissing anyone on the lips. I know that grandma's and grandpa's love kissing their little angels, but just say that baby has a boo-boo.

As far as treating it. There are lots of over the counter medicines...however, I would take your child to the peditrian (sp) so that he/she can give your daughter some topical.

Good Luck.

Abreva helps but cold sores just seem to take forever to heal. I swear there is a connection between spicy food, and sunburn on the lips. I know they are highly contagious. I put abreva on a cotton swab and then on the sore. We don't share drinks or chap stick when there is an outbreak.

Call your doctor for any advice for treating her cold sore. I use Abreva and it helps. My sister swears by Blistex [the white/red tube kind]. I know a guy who uses Campho Phenique (spelling?). I would try to keep it clean and it should be fairly safe to put some Vaseline on it to keep it somewhat moist. I tend to keep putting something on it early on to keep it 'wet' and if/when it's oozing, I try to keep it dry.
