That depends on what you are trying to do. If you are trying to develop more strength, then I would say bench press high weight low reps. But if you are trying to build more tone, then either do lots and lots of pushups, or bench lower weight more reps or do both. Bench press doesn't work as many muscles as pushups do though. Pushups work chest, tricep mainly, but also abs, back, butt, and a little of your thighs. Bench press is basically just chest and triceps, and a small amount of abs. So bench press is better if you're just trying to make your chest (and triceps) bigger, but if you want overall workout, then I would either do a bunch of pushups, or some pushups and some bench presses.

Have you done either before?
Push ups are like a stepping stone to bench press. Muscle responds to load so ultimately bench press would be the best choice as you can lift a greater load.
Both exercises pose a risk of injury if not done with correct form so when you start on the bench press use a lighter load and higher reps until you have perfected your form.
Both exercises definately have their place in a program so I would recomend a mixture of both.

Both are good if done correctly. If you are looking for an increase in muscle go with the bench press. Push ups are great once you work up to 100 or more at a time, but they don't provide the muscle mass increase that the bench press does.

Push ups. Bench press works the arms. Push ups work muscles in the arms and the back and the stomach and the butt and the legs and the chest.

Bench press. Pushups mainly shoulders to tell you the truth. Your bench will go up quickly, make sure you have a wide enough grip and make sure you go slow and lightly touch the bar to your chest, or just an inch off your chest. Increase the weight slowly.

Bench press is better for building mass and pure strength, while push-ups focus more on toning and endurance.

dude a bench press. pushups you have a limit of weight. the idiot that said the bench pressing works your arms is retarded, that happens if you do them incorrectly. with a bench press you can work inner outer and central chest muscles depending on were you grip it from. ive been bench pressing since my freshman year and my chest is nice and sturdy

Push ups work more muscles. You can increase the effort by clapping between pushes.. by doing them one handed... by raising your legs onto a bench.. by raising your arms on basketballs... by doing handstand pushups against a wall.... and you don't need a gym membership or a barbell.

If you are looking for a full body workout, pushups. If you are looking for the classic man-boobs, benchpress with a lot of weight.
