so I'm the new guy at a fast food place.
I make mistakes there.
But today, business was really slow and we were overstaffed.
there were too many people there and nothing for us to do, so I went and talked to some other people working there. 10 minutes there our co-manager told me and a different girl told us it was okay to leave 30 minutes early so I did.
I waited 15 minutes outside for my ride to pick me up, but as I was leaving, I saw that other girl still working in the shop.

Ooh, not good. I wouldn't say you'd get fired right away. The other girl got scared and found something to do. I think you can still fix your situation temporarily by following her lead (unless, of course, she didn't have his permission to stay). In the meantime, look for another job. If they lay people off, it would probably be the untested new hires over the well-trained ones.

And don't let the manager catch you standing around talking. Mop up. Clean the windows. Just do something.

A number of things may have happened while you were waiting for your ride, the girl may have asked if it was OK to stay or it may have started getting busy. I don't think you have a problem with leaving, the place was overstaffed and fast food companies try to keep payroll down, the co-manager probably appreciated the fact you left when business was slow. If you are still concern you may want to talk to the co-manager letting them know you need the job, and leaving early you thought would help them out because there was nothing to do.

Well if the co-manager said it was ok to leave, I would say no. In fact when I worked as an assistant manager people could get in trouble for not leaving when asked too.

No. You were told you could leave.

Your choice was probably actually better than the girl's. frankly most fast food places don't care too much about their employees (which is why they pay them so little), money means more to them than anything (which is true about most businesses). You leaving saved them money...which they LOVE. When I was in high school I had a friend who worked at McDonald's. There was some sort of percentage they had to be working at (amount of money they brought in to how much they were paying employees), if they weren't bringing in enough money compared to how much they were paying employees, they would start to send people home.

I don't think you should get fired if your co-manager told you it was okay to leave. If she chose to leave, that's her issue and you should not worry about it.
