I thought it was a wonderful read. The author was skillful in the way he crafted everything--it feels like there's always a climax coming up, which kept me reading further even though I was getting sleepy (because I had been reading for hours). There are suspenseful points during which I couldn't help but feel the way Amir, the main character, was feeling like, which is quite something because I'm not the kind of person that reads a lot of novels anymore.
Another great thing about The Kite Runner was that it gave an impressive image of Afghanistan and northern Pakistan from the 1970's as well as 2001, something that CNN and other news programs have always failed to show. I think the novel does a great job describing the setting, culture, and lifestyle of those people--the way Amir felt when he arrived in Pakistan when he was an adult was the same way I had felt a few years back when I went back there.
The novel also takes us to California, where the main character eventually moves to, and so you also get a glimpse of what an immigrant has to go through. I felt like the description of what Amir had to go through was very accurate--life can be the best one day and a disaster the next. Amir and his father, Baba (that's what I call my father too!) were among the most affluent people in their neighborhood in Kabul when the story began, but once they came to America, they had to start from scratch and qualified for welfare.
The book wasn't perfect, though. I still didn't think that thing Baba said about stealing being a sin made complete sense. It started to, but I thought "stealing someone's right to the truth" was taking it a little too far.
Overall, though, it was an amazing coming-of-age story. This was the first novel I had read in a long time, and even though I take forever to finish books this long, it only took me a few days...people say that books can take you anywhere around the world but this was the first novel I know of that actually applies to that saying. Needless to say I'm looking forward to watching the movie when it comes out in November.

Try "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by the author of "The Kite Runner." I haven't read it yet, but my friends who have loved it. It also has high ratings on Amazon.
