Congratulations on knowing what you want to do when you graduate. If you are serious about joining the CG when you graduate, then I have a youth program that may give you more info on what exactly you want to do in the Coast Guard. The program is called the U S Naval Sea Cadet Corps and it open to kids ages 13-18, there is a program for younger kids from 11-13 called the U S Navy League Cadet Corps. They are sponsored by the Navy. They give you a sample of what types of jobs and training that Navy personal do. I'm not sure where you are from, but there are units near to most locations. You can find out more on the Sea Cadets website at www.seacadets.org you can email me with any question you have.

Well, young man, you are on the right track. I don't know where you live but there are a few things you should know about if you don't already. First, there is the Coast Guard Auxiliary. This is a group of volunteers who perform many of the missions the Cost Guard does and has been around ove 60 years. If you have a local Auxiliary Flotilla you can join when you turn 17 years old. It is not a paying job or anything but the training is free. If you can become "Boat Crew Certified" in your flotilla before going into the Coast Guard you will automaticall be promoted up one grade when you graduate. (nice little boost in pay and prestige). I included a link for the Coast Guard Auxiliary for you to explore.
I also included a link for the Coast Guard Academy. This is a fully accredited college. Admission is not that difficult if you get good grades in High School and particpate in sports and clubs.
If you are admitted you will actually be paid to attend college. The education is free. The only cost to you is upon admission you have to purchase a laptop computer. That's it.
You recieve your clothing, your accomodations and all meals. You will receive an extremely valuable degree in such things as Naval Architecture or Electrical Engineering etc. The individual class sizes are small (about 8 students per instructor) so you have an easy time keeping up. There is plenty of help.
When you gradulate you are an Ensign in the Coast Guard with a five year obligation to serve. That includes at least two years at sea as an officer.
Where else can you bet paid to go to school and have a guranteed job when you graduate?

Just to clarify some points a bit... The CG is currently in Iraq, Afghanistan and Bahrain along with several other locations around the globe. There are instances where the CG has seen combat action in recent years. In past years they were the river rats in VietNam, they were the ones that drove quite a few of the troop transports that left soldiers on the beaches in WWII. They were in WWI, Korea and every other war this country has been in and will continue to be involved on whatever level is needed. Yes, they do guard the coast. They also go around Cape Horn, the Cape of Good Hope, through the Panama Canal, up into the Arctic ice, down to the Antarctic. My son has been enlisted for about 2.5 years and he has been to 12 foreign countries. My ex-husband is a Captain in the CG, he has been to over 20 countries, including Russia and a year tour in Iraq where he earned the Bronze Star. So people who say they don't venture to far from the coast of the US are 100% inaccurate! The CG is now and will continue to be worldwide.

Hey look at it this way, I graduate in 2010. I am obsessed about joining the Marines. I found an awesome program called Young Marines. I have been obsessed since about 2-3 years ago, how old you are. I have been getting ready to enlist now by joining young marines, recieving packets from the Marines, and getting information from former marines and different oppurtunities. All I can say is talk to military personel in your community, find out information before it's too late, just start getting ready to join right now, before you join.

Well, you have time to think it over. I am prior Navy and I worked with Coasties through-out my time in. I think they are often overlooked by folks looking at joining the military and it's a shame as they have a lot of good jobs, duty stations, and are taken care of.
Think more about what occupation within the Armed forces you would like to do, and the reason you want to enlist, and it will help guide you to the right service for you. Most careers are available in every service (including the coast guard), but some services are better places to be serving in for the specific careers.

Yea I graduate the same year as you, I have been wanting to join either the Army or the Navy, What I need is some basic explanation of them both. I know what they are but don't know a whole alot in detail about them. But anyways You might change your mind in the 4-5 years. But if you really want to do it then stick to it.
