I wasn't clear enough in the question. This question is spacifically about people sitting outside of someones house and honking the horn for them to hurry and come out--not in traffic.

Yes it's very rude. It would be better if the person doing the honking would actually get out of the car and go the front door and ring a doorbell or knock. Tis better to wait inside the house than in a car.

Beeping the horn to let someone know ur there to pick them up or to hurry them up all depends on the person (will it offend them) and the time of day (noone will like u honking the horn at 5am)

what really annoys me is when people park outside of someone's house/apartment and sit there honking their horn for whoever they're waiting on to come out. hello!? that mess is so obnoxious, especially when it's early in the morning or late at night. it's called a cellphone people, use it to let someone know you're waiting for them instead using your horn to let the entire neighborhood know!!

It's not rude at a stop light to just fire a quick beep to wake up the guy in front of you.
But to lay on the horn is a little much.

If you're old, then yes, it's rude

if you are in the fast lane going slow,
weaving around while on your cell phone,
chatting and putting,
or just plan clogging things up.
then no, it's not rude
it's a necessity

edit; yes that is beyond rude - the rest of the neighborhood does not want to hear it - GET Up and walk to the door, if you don't have a cell phone.

If someone sits outside my home and honks the car horn, they get cussed out. You get your a.ss out of that car and walk to my door, DO NOT honk.

At a stoplight, if someone is sitting at the green, it's ok.

no i dont think its rude. what i think is rude is when you tell someone.."hey, im turning on your street, so come on out" giving you 2-3 mins to take your slow butt outside and tearfully tear you away from your dvds. so, the person THEN has to sit there and wait in the middle of the road for your slow self to saunter on out.yeah that person should honk. if youre going to be that slow in coming on out, ummm...yeah im going to honk. then when you finally decide the time is right for you, you think its ok for YOU to get angry. sppff. cry baby. ill keep on honking now. :)

In England it is an offence to beep your car horn unless as a warning to other road users. People do it, especially taxi drivers. I find it lazy and inconsiderate.

At a stop light my answer is "no," because the person in front might be spacing out and not realize the light has changed.

When driving in traffic the answer is "yes."

depends on the relationship between the two people (the one in the car honking and one, as you say, in the house, getting honked at)

ppl i would honk at:
real good friend
sibling or cousin

ppl i wouldnt honk at:
parent
uncle/aunt
