Can you be a good parent if you smoke pot, or do drugs?
i am amazed to see the amount of people who think that you can...,
To be a good parent you have to be able to care for your child, teach them good examples, teach them responsibility, how to make good decisions,ect...
How can you teach these things if you are teaching otherwise by your examples?
please explain. becuse to me, it doesn't seem possible.

sweet young, for your information my husband and i don't go to parties and get drunk or buzzed and then drive home....
as a matter of fact, i agree thet it is probably just as bad if you do. i think that as parents we have to set examples. we aren't perfect but we should try to think of our children everytime we have a choice, and clearly anything that impairs your judgement as a parent is a bad idea.
to the ones that think it is ok as long as it's not done in front of the children... thats called being a hypocrite and children are a lot smarter than you think... they will catch on.

It isn't possible. You teach them to be pot heads and alcoholics and druggies.Their life will be worse than their parents because they think they know it all and can handle anything the parent can and then some.I have seen it happen many many times. The only time a child turns out good is when the reject their parent's lifestyle, turn to the LORD and don't do as their parents do.

if you're doing drugs you're not respecting yourself or your children.. one it's illegal which is an awful example you're setting, and two it's harming yourself which is another horrible example. Anyone who thinks that they can do something so bad to themselves yet be good parents are dead wrong.. If you wanted to teach this you could show shocking images of the effects of drugs to get it in people's heads, and then have discussion where they're participating in it.. ask questions like how does harming yourself set an example, do you expect your kids to stay away from drugs if they're in the home, if you had to choose drugs or your kids which would you choose.. if you're still smoking, then you've already choosen. Ask questions that might make people feel a little guilty yet will make them think at the same time. Good luck

what is the difference between smokin pot (odviously not around your children ) and gettin drunk? no one is perfect being a good parent is putting your children first. so if you are going to do something that impares your judgment make sure that someone is there for the kids sober such as your spouse. so the next time you think that only bad people do drugs consider this how good of a parent are you when you and your spouse go to a party get buzzed and then drive home pay the sitter and take care of the kids then by yourselves. if an emergeny occurs are you gonna drive your kids to the hospital drunk or buzzed. shame on you bad people your no better than the next bad parent.

It is impossible. If you do illegal things then you're not abiding by the rules and you're teaching your children not to abide by those rules. Granted, I'll have a few drinks about twice a year but neither of my sons EVER see this and never would--and I am of a legal age. A parent doesn't have to be a stiff boring person to be a good parent but you can't be unlawful. Even if I were a pothead or whatever I would stop just because I'd be scared of getting arrested and having my kids taken away from me. You can't be a good parent if you don't worry about doing something that has the potential to have your kids taken away forever.

Too many people look at people who do drugs as "bad". People who do drugs do them mainly because they don't know what else to do. They're hurting and they do the drugs to avoid the pain. I'm not saying it's the smart thing to do but it's why most do it.
I believe it's possible for a parent who does drugs to be a good parent. I believe it's possible for people who do drugs to be loving, caring parents. I believe a parent can be a much better parent without the drugs. But I don't believe in condemning people for their addictions.
I don't condone doing drugs but I believe people who are addicted to drugs would be able to kick the addiction a lot sooner if they were treated with compassion and understanding instead of judgment and dismissal.

maybe such parents does not do it in front of their kids.....some of this parents are actually good...i mean they did try i am sure to feed and raise up their kids right...but some need help....they are humans with weaknesses.....for me condemning them is not the answer...if we give them a chance talk to them perhaps involve them into our lives and friends, bring them in (which do not smoke pots or take drugs) also include their kids....with time some could be help to turn over a new leaf....
how many times have i actually witness the agony of a drug addict mother having their child taken away from them and how they turn to be even worst....how do we know how they feel...they may appear tough with on care but is in ourselves to love the child we actually produced (genetically as proven by the unthinking animals)...........they do love the child...it is with this love for the child can we attract them to do better and relate this to the welfare of their babies....i am sure maybe if not all some will come our way......

it depends how you look at it. if you do it infront of your children, then absolutely not! but a joint when you have some alone time isnt going to kill your children- as long as youre not addicted. its just like sending the kids to grandmas after a long day at work and staying home having a beer or two.
kids ARE going to do stupid things- but you have to let them learn from their own mistakes. you can still set good examples if you do those every once in a while, but it cant be an ongoing thing.

to answer your questions with more questions can you be a good parent if you drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, don't excercise and eat fatty foods?
I think it is possible for someone to be a "good" parent even if they are not perfect. However being a "great" parent might be another story
