I remember when I overdosed on pills, trying to commit suicide, & I was knocked out cold, & I woke up in handcuffs. & one time when I was really young, my foster dad had pneumonia & was having a seizure & had a massive stroke & died, & they put him in handcuffs during his seizure.

I think that's pretty cruel to put an ill person in handcuffs.

I think you are confusing "hand cuffs" with "wrists restraints" as we prefer to call them in the health care Profession. Both situations that you mentioned sounds adequate for the use of restraints.
First you said you overdosed on pills, well people react differently when under the influence of medications, so as a precaution and for safety reasons, patients are often restrained, not handcuffed, there is a difference.
About the Seizure incident again, during that time the patient can easily hurt themselves and those around, so the paramedics "restrain" the patient to keep the patient safe. Both situations called for safety measures and this is one way to make sure of that.
I am sorry if it seems cruel. But is a safety measure.

the reason they put him in handcuffs was for his own safety...i have had seizures in the past and some people flail their arms around and move around...during a seizure such movements can either injure the person or the person(s) attending to them (paramedics, firefighters, doctors) its just a form of restraint the is quick and efficient for an emergency. some people who are uncouscious and are being attended by paramedics will most often (depending on the injury) be restrained by straps to the bed. its not cruel, its to insure a safe ride to the hospital with any incidents.

i know that here in Ontario and i think the rest of Canada the paramedics don't hand cuff people . they may from time to time with a doctors permission use what are called mechanical restraints . they are not really mechanical as they are more like straps that would attach to the stretcher. this is not often done but it is sometimes needed to protect the person or the medical staff.
i suspect if you dug into this you would find that the police were involved and that they put the handcuffs on the person.

Do you mean why? If so, it's probably to control a possibly bad situation. A person that's mentally out of it enough to try to commit suicide, you never know. They could wake up and try something else.. to themselves, or to the paramedics. Same with a seizure. Some people black out during seizures and become violent.

Medics need to protect themselves when they have a combative patient. Some people picked up are violent drunks or addicts or suicidal. Some people have violent seizures or are combative from diabetic attacks or head injuries where they need to remain still to avoid further injury. My husband is a Firefighter/Medic and they use leather restraints only rarely to protect themselves and the patient. If a patient is violent ,they usually call the police to the scene for assistance.

Safety for the patient to prevent flailing and injuring himself...
Safety for the paramedic to prevent hurting the rescuer...

You might even have to stab them with a syringe full of tranquilizer just like if they were a wild animal.

nicely, i did no longer pick you in looking this out so early in existence - yet they confirmed a youthful woman of 5 years previous being handcuffed and delivered to penal complex because of the fact she became writing on her table. (This became right this moment's Dr. Phil) so as this is the mentality of the common peace officer who bargains with people who're non-combative and its purely much less demanding for them. The others they only suggestions with their batons. each and every see a insurrection? dissimilar swinging occurring.

when you are mentally instable they are going to do that to prevent even more injury. imagine having a seizure and falling and hitting your head or something worse like fall out of a window. it's not something you want to happen. paramedics know what they're doing and they do everything for a reason it's not inhumane at all.

first off paramedics don't have handcuffs they have restraints and they are only using it for medical reasons and I'm sure you were cuffed so if someone wasn't with you when you finally awoke you wouldn't try to kill yourself again
