You can chew sugared or sugarless gum and experience the mechanical removal of plaque from your teeth. It is just that sugarless is better for your teeth as it doesn't feed the bacteria that cause cavities.
Also rubbing your tooth with your finger or some other such object will remove plaque from your teeth. I am just wondering why you don't use toothpaste and toothbrush?
And floss once a day. You won't have to buy as much gum, and you will do a better job.

In Dental Hygiene school I did a project on this subject and found that it does help reduce plaque (the mechanical action of chewing) as long as you chew sugarless.
