We're thinking of ,moving out there just for that reason. Is it worth it?

The South has a deep interest in Portraits, it's pretty traditional for almost everyone to have an Oil Portrait done, if it can be afforded. The East is 2nd, and the West is 3rd. Almost anywhere you have large populations you can make it work if you are good enough. Mediocre Artists don't make it anywhere. Sedona AZ is a well known Artist colony for just about any kind of art. Check out PortraitArtist.com, also known as A Stroke of Genius. There is an artist forum in there that will help answer all your questions. Many famous artists have given free information to anyone who is serious about doing Portraits for a living....worth it's weight in gold! There are whole sections about opinions on where to set up shop!

The portrait artists here in New Orleans do really well, also in Key West. My husband has tried everywhere and those two places were the best. Although Key West is great during the spring , summer and fall, I do not know how it is during the winter. And yes New Orleans is back and the artists are doing great!

Either coast should be better for art appreciation. Sad, but true.

Er... "If you can make it there you make it anywhere."
It is all up to you. Location is not that important if you are good. They will find you anyway.
So... just for that reason is a bit over the top in my (humble) opinion.
