The pet store should provide a box for you. You could call ahead to make sure. If not, you will need a box just big enough for the parakeet to fit into and be able to turn around. You don't want it so big that he could hurt himself trying to fly inside the box.

If he is not tame, just open the door to the cage. Open the box very carefully and put the box to the opening of the cage. After a few seconds, or maybe a minute or two, he should go into the cage. If not...you should take the box and cage into a small closet or bathroom. Put on a pair of thick gloves and open the box. Very carefully pick up the bird and put him in the cage. If he bites you it won't hurt because you have the gloves on. And if he gets away you'll have an easier time catching him if you are in a small inclosed room.

Actually, the pet store will provide a box for you (such as Petsmart or Petco) If the cage is big enough to put the box thru then here's what you do:

Put the carboard box in the cage
Open it
Tilt it slightly so the bird can come out

Do not listen to I love cena because those cages are too tiny and birds are ment for flying and not being crammed in a 2 by 2 by 2 cage
I recommend to buy 2 birds (they don't like to live alone) and get a cage that is not HUGE but not tiny. A cage for conures (just make sure it has the correct bar spacing which is up to 3/4 an inch) is good because you want to provide the biggest area possible.

The pet store should provide you with a small card board box to bring it home in, but I would still place that box inside a cage so that if it chews through the cardboard as ours did, it only gets loose in it's cage.

Most stores will provide a small cardboard box, but you can always get a bird carrier from the petstore too.
