2-3 months gross salary, definitely over a thousand.

The engagement ring was just under 800CDN - probably close to 1K now. It is a solitaire with two shoulder stones, in yellow gold. The matching wedding band has three of the smaller stones, and was about 400. I'd say the set is pretty 'average' as to price, and I LOVE IT!
DON'T believe the junk about it being 2 or 3 months' salary - that's just marketing crap!
Guys should ONLY spend what they can comfortably afford, there's no need to go into debt over a ring. A mature woman understands the symbolism of the ring!!! It's much more special just to have the man choose something he thinks she might like, and have it be in his price range.

$100 on engagement ring, $150 on custom wedding band. I'm a simple girl and got exactly what I wanted. I'd honestly feel like a bad person if I would have a ring that cost over $1000...that money can be put to much better use. If someone has that much money to spend on a rock and some metal, they aren't giving enough to charity or saving enough for their future children.

It depends on what you earn, but in the UK it is one month salary, I guess the US girls are more materialistic and go for 2-3 months salary. But you know what, that was all made up by the diamond companies to make more money, but how funny that people think it's a rule, just goes to show how easily people are sucked in by companies wanting to bleed them dry of money. I'd personally be shocked if my b/f spent 1 month salary, let alone 2-3 months salary, I'm not materialistic at all, and the fact that my ring cost less than £100 is no ones business except mine, it was given with as much love and meaning as any Tiffany trinket.

It all depends on who you are and what you can afford/think is acceptable. I know how much my husband spent b/c I picked out my own ring. He was too nervous to do it without me. And it was over a thousand. Does your brother make less, or is he just really, really cheap? In the long run, it doesn't matter how much is spent on the ring, but that you got it out of love.

I'm pretty sure that it's 3 months salary.

I also think that it shouldn't matter, people put way too much emphasis on money these days. Spending more money does not mean that he loves you more or that you two will last forever.

I feel the same about big outrageous weddings. The money would be better spent on something like a home that you can start your lives together in. Why start a marriage off in debt up to your eyeballs? It's ridiculous!

If you don't find the answer you wanted on here, look up engagement ring etiquette in a search engine.

Good luck!

My engagement ring ONLY costed almost $4000. It is a Past, Present, Future ring with an engravement on the inside. He bought it from Zales and it is a karat and a half. Some guys spend less, some spend more--depending on his income. You can go to Walmart or Kmart and buy something cheap to start with and then later go back and get the nice ring.

Technically etiquette states that it should be two to three months salary, HOWEVER if you are just out of college and/or in a situation where you actually need to live off of your salary instead of spend it all on diamond rings, its simply a matter of what you can get for what you can afford. My husband bought mine as a set and paid about $3500 total, but he also already had a house, a truck, had no college loans, etc.

There are several rules of thumb on how much to spend on an engagement ring.

1. Two months income.
2. Six weeks income or 6% of yearly income.

But I think you need to consider budget. Not everyone has be budget to spend two months salaery on a ring. I know my set is valued at $5,000 but I also know he did not pay that. He got a very good deal on a loose diamond and then had it set. He also bougth the wedding band seperately so he also got a great deal on that.

Remember, the mark up on jewelry is unbeleivable high so you can really dicker witih the sales people. It is not unheard of to get up to 70% of the original asking price. You just need to study up and know how to bargan. My husband is great at it.

Everyone who says 2-3 months salary is absolutely WRONG. This is a myth perpetuated by DeBeers - the biggest seller of diamonds in the world. Your brother should spend what he can afford and what others have spent is not relevant in any way shape or form. You are not doing him any favors by encouraging him to spend more.
