most definately!!! I'm in my high school marching band and I'm a sax player. I must also add- most of the aforementioned stereotypes for instruments are pretty true. If I had to classify it I'd say

flute= I'm happy, I can play higher than you, and I'm probably here because I'm too delicate for a bigger instrument or I can't twirl a flag. very optimistic

clarinet= I want to play an obnoxious instrument, but I'd rather stay out of the brass section. Usually quiet people.

saxophone= likes to play loud. kinda crazy. wants to be heard. usually very outgoing and sometimes very pushy.

oboe= stuck up? not ALWAYS.

bassoon= I've only met one bassoon player so I won't judge. :)

trumpet= Verrrrry egotistical.

trombone= don't know many. the ones I know are kinda goofy and very funloving. probably the most talented musicians I know.

baritone= tuba wanna-bes? Just couldn't handle the pressure, sometimes kinda shy and want to be in with the trombones.

tuba= very funny. usually know what they're doing. stubborn?

Yeah, I think so, I play Piano, guitar, and bass. Flute: Softie on the inside and out, bookish, mousy, average Clarinet: Happy, smart, interesting Sax: Smart, interesting, funloving Oboe: Weird, random Bassoon: Must really love the bassoon for some reason (the person who plays) Trumpet: average, hyper, calculating Trombone: average, good at measuring Baritone: No idea Tuba: serious, likes games Percussion: Likes variety, colorful Guitar:- can be any type of person, but easy to understand because of the different types ie folk, the person would be folk-ish Rock, the person would be punk rockish Piano: (Classical)( calculating, smart, romantic, serious (jazz/electric music) Fun loving, outgoing, surprising Violin: (classical) same as piano-classical but then again, also the same as guitar, there are many styles.
More over, each instrument listed has many styles they can be played in, this makes it easier to gage how the player is personality wise. I think that one can make an assumption about another based on the instrument they play, but it is always important that after getting to know the person, the stereotype is dropped if they are different. Never treat someone stereotypically. Always get to know a person because many times, assumptions can be wrong. (this is ofcourse, not counting people who look like murderous psychos, those, you can avoid XD)
I'm wondering why you didn't include : Cello, viola, bass guitar, bass, lute, harp, harpsicord, fiddle, and voice.

I play the piano. When I thought of learning other instruments, the interest was never as strong. I loved the piano for many years. When I was 3, I carried a toy piano with me around the house. When I was 9, I once pretended I could play, though I didn't know a single note and the piano was viciously out of tune. When I would stop practicing for some reason, or was but still not good, I would have dreams desiring to be able to play. I've had many dreams involving playing, some recurring dreams. Since I've learned, I feel a special connection to it I absolutely love. I would say it must mean it describes my inner personality somehow, because the attachment I feel is very strong.

Guitar, I play classical guitar, I love violin (someday I may study it ) You forgot the cello, as you can tell I'm a string person. I've noticed that most of the people that play classical guitar seem quite, dignified, the more serious type of personality. As you can see my first answerer was quite, so the percussion is out for me, there too loud. I am not a wind person, I don't care for flute, clarinet, trumpet, tuba, or bassoon, what's weird is that I do like them all put together in an orchestra, I love concertos. I like the piano sound but have no desire to play it. My favorite is the solo instrument, I guess that's why I like concertos because they usually have a featured soloist, I love Vivaldi music, especially the Four Seasons. I hope this answered your questions alright.

Yes, people with certain personalities are attracted to certain instruments. An alum of my college wrote his Masters on instrument personalities. Here's some of the most obvious ones.
Flutes - perfectionists, attentive to conductor
double reeds - they are all a bit odd, all that back pressure!
trumpet - egotistical, leaders
trombones - fun loving, talk alot b/c they have so many rests
tubas - "Huh?" a little slow if you catch my drift
percussion - hyper, always hitting something
violin - they are the best and should be concert master!

For the most part I think it is true...although I have met some who go against the norm.

I'm going to talk about trumpet: Trumpet players for the most part are extremely competitive and think highly of their instrumental ability, however, in the rest of life they may not have this same arrogance. Have you heard of the trumpet players handshake? It goes like this *puts out hand to shake* , "Hi, I'm better than you!"

How many trumpet players does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
6. One to do it, and 5 to tell him/her how much better they would have done it.

yes, yes, and yes, I am 56 and yes with age does come at least some wisdom. I am quite left brained and mathematically inclined and I love the piano, why ? because it is like math, for every key you play you get a sound, very concrete. Now ask me to play a guitar or violin where it takes more finesse, oh my. I think all the string instruments take more of a left brained, artistic type person, as it has more variance. My fave is the bass cello,go figure, but I love deep deep music and ??? I just love the bass cello. Oh yes, I also love love love drums, and I am a very intense person and have the rhythm of a black person even tho I am as white as snow and I love love love love to dance. I love all music except jazz because it has no regular beat etc. (not mathematical) I also like to smock (sewing by hand) and found out mathematical people also love this hobby :) I love to listen to flute and accustical guitar, but I am of the PP& M generation too, and I love to listen to Jim Brickman on piano, I also love the flute in Peter and the Wolf as it brings such life to the character as do the other instruments including the oboe or bassoon I think it is for the wolf ???? I used to beg to listen to it when I was a kid, under 10. I would listen for hours and still love it. So often I have seen tuba players and they are on the chubby side ?? I don't think it is the ability to carry the tuba, I think it is something else, like we are like our dogs. I more than love Kenny G on his sax. Doug McClure plays his bass cello for Christian music and was even asked to play for the Pope that just died, I loved Pope John Paul, I am not a Catholic, but he was a very special man. Doug Mcclure has a marvelous miraculous story and gave up playing in the San Francisco Philharmonic Orchestra as God said to and he was GIVEN like the most expensive cello in the world and now he has cd's and has played by invitation for the pope etc. It is a marvelous story. You can email me w_bignotti@yahoo.com if you want to hear it, it is absolutely amazing and you can buy his cds.

I have found that the people who are really very good at the instrument they play usually don't fit the stereotype of the instrument.

I suppose considering that men and women are attracted to an software for plenty of causes. For a few it is the sound, for others its the ethos of the software as a entire. I play bass and guitar and (attempt to) sing, however i determine with bass as MY software. There are stereotypes and tendencies, however they differ relying on who you ask.
