I don't know. I can tell you from my perspective. I feel sorry for Detroit. Ever since I have seen Michael Moore talking about Flint, Michigan and the auto industry cutting jobs......hearing the news talk about how life is so tough in Detroit.....I have kind of a pity for that city.

After living in Michigan for a good share of my life, Detroit just never lived up to other cities in the states. It's certainly never got the rep that other big cities have enjoyed and it's had it's ups and downs. However, given that I don't know why anyone would look at you funny for being from there unless they had lived and experienced your city. Maybe you are being too sensitive. It may not be at the top of the food chain for American cities but it has some things to offer. Try sharing some of those things with those people who react to you that way.

Detroit has an international reputation as a city with lots of violence, racial and gang problems, and economic and unemployment problems. Some people may wonder if you are going to pull a gun or knife on them.
Just don't pay it any attention. Most people don't know very much about much of anything. Tell them you are from some other place, or some suburb nobody ever heard of, or tell them some good things about Detroit. Or just hold your head up and let them burn their eyes on you moving, as the old song says...

They may have a bad impression or opinion of Detroit or maybe they have never heard of Detroit. Hold your head up high and proudly tell them you are from Detroit. Ignore their funny looks, your pride and great attitude will show them a positive side of your great city. It may even get them to change their mind.

You're probably too cute to be from Detroit. They heard bad things about that city. Lie. Tell them you're from Howell or Brighton or Lansing.

probably because you're saying "in" instead of "I'm"
and you probably are expected to have an accent and don't, or vice versa
