i started tae-kwon-do not too long ago [about a month ago]
usually i feel fine after a session, but on occasion [3-4 times a month] we have a day that involves a serious workout, and i end up overheating, ive been told its because of my long hair [which is still too short to tye back, so that isnt an option]
i know its not just my out-of-shape-ness because there are 10 year old girls [im 14, and the girls are, no insult intended, "bigger", than me, and have only been doing it about a month longer].

how can i prevent this next time?
[other than drinking more water, which ive already tried]

There are a variety of options for you:

*Don't drink soft drinks (i.e., Sprite, Pepsi, etc) on the day when you have a really intense workout scheduled

**The unusually high mineral content of these drinks, as well as the caffeine in some of them tend to dry you out.

*Wear a lighter weight gi (karate uniform).

**Korean arts tend to wear a heavier gi than those in southern parts of north Asia (i.e., Okinawa, etc.), in the summertime.

**Please check with your instructor if this is an option.

*If the workout last longer than 60 minutes, try drinking Gatorade, if cutting out soft drinks, and drinking more H2O doesn't cut it for you.

**I can't speak for the other "sports drinks" brands, but good, ol' Gatorade had a balance of minerals to help you beat down your thirst.

**This stuff really works, if your workout is at least 60 minutes of intense sweating.

***Martial arts drills/sparring.

***Football drills, with pads, on hot days.

***Prolonged patrol acty. with body armor on days over 90 degrees (F).

***Jogging/running on 85+ degree (F) days.

***Etc.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

There are a number of things that can contribute to over heating. Caffeine intake is one of them so if you eat a lot of candy or chocolate or drink a lot os soda that may be the problem. Also some people just don't tolerate the heat as well as others do and their body systems don't run as efficient when taxed. There are also certain medical conditions as well as medications that can have a huge impact on this. If not taking any medications and you are not taking any caffeine in I would continue to drink water like you are now and the next time you go to the doctor ask him/her about it.

I hope you didn't stop "trying" to drink more water. Drink lots of water, always. Make sure your eating light before your class or eat after your class or eat a few hours before your class.

Long hair, even if it's not very long can be like a helmet if your hair is half as thick as mine. I recommend a salad before that class and to work on your out-of-shapeness.

Another important thing about over-heating is your circulation. Make sure your belt is tied in a Strong knot that doesn't have to be tight on you to work. Make sure your comfortable.

Do not eat 1 hour before class. It will cause your body to get more overheated. But try Gatorade drink it in between breaks.
But not during the class.

Drink a lot of water and make sure you are cool before class because most places do not turn on the air.
