It is like being the finger on the hand, thinking that you are the finger itself and nothing else; however, the finger only exists as long as there is a hand and body instructing the movement of the finger.
Another way of thinking this is the tail on the dog thinks it is the one causing the tail to move on its own, not thinking that it is part of the body.
That is how our egos are. It thinks it is all that it is and nothing else. We are ignorant of our Oneness with God. Another person is like that other finger on the same hand. We hurt others thinking that it won't hurt ourselves, but as long as we hurt another, we end up hurting the whole.
On our own, we have our limitations and are totally dependent on God for our existence. It is God's will that we live, breathe and exist. If we allow ourselves to submit, surrender and let God's will enter our life, then we gain so much more love, beauty, blessings, miracles, awareness and so on. We infact become the whole.
As long as our ego thinks it is the whole rather than the part, we will continue to be blocked off to the rest of our True Self.

To be separated from God literally means that you cannot exist. In the second death one can become "separated" from God. It's the worse punishment anyone could endure.

First, God never separates Himself from us. We tend to do the separating. It means that you no longer have a relationship with Him.

God is a Spirit.
We were created originally to be both Spirit and Body. Its our spirits that has died because of sin that separates us from a Holy God.
YOU can have your Spirit Re-Born if you accept Christ as your Savior,and then you will no longer be seperated, because your Spirit will come alive.
