First off, they recognize that astrophysics is *NOT* an old-timey remedy for constipation.

Second, they know some pretty far-out (pun intended) physics speculations, like that one about actions & reactions (versus the Christians' assertion that "everything happens for a purpose").

Fifth, they actually grasp that space is big. Really big. Christians just won't believe how vastly hugely mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, they might think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space.

Astrophysicists understand the validity of Einstein's speed-of-light-in-a-vacuum limit. As Carl Sagan noted, had Jesus ascended toward Heaven even at the speed of light, He STILL would not yet have left the Milky Way galaxy.

And, practically speaking, astrophysicists are aware of the statistics: in all of the hours logged by all of the astronomers at their telescopes since Galileo, we have yet to see a four-square city, a far-off throne, a whiskered old man in flowing robes, or even the scarcest flit of an angel out there. Our universe is "Deus in absentia," minus the Deus.

Most of the academy is atheist. Since when is truth a matter of majority opinion? Is that a scientific principle? Are scientists the priests to whom humble submission is due?

There are plenty of believing scientists -- John Polkinghorne, for example. The thoughtful ones tend not to be fundamentalists, though.

I think maybe its what they don't know. they are possibly so fixated on their studies and careers that they do not be knowing what is in front of their face. They are like the Laputians. Historically most astrophysicists are Christians - look at names of craters on the Luna. God bless!

I don't know whether what you assert is true.
I can tell you of one astrophysicist named Hugh Ross who has convinced many other scientists that science is entirely compatible with a correct interpretation of the Biblical revelation of creation.

they mix up facts with truth. They think because they can observe a set of quantifiable data, they have knowledge. Little do they understand that true knowledge is a covenental relationship between the Knower and the known.

Where did you get that statistic? I working at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and there seem to be plenty of astrophysics there who believe in God.
