He may not be needing his nap, if he won't sleep, then he probably isn't tired - although this isn't always the case either, so you will know the signs if your little one is tired or not. If he really doesn't seem tired but you want to have the quiet time just lay him down and put some toys with him and some music on maybe and tell him its quiet time, we do this with my 3 year old just to get the little break. This way he knows he can still play but must be quiet and rest a little bit.
I wouldn't spend 2 hours trying to get him to sleep, by the time he does then, it would be too late for a nap anyway. Try getting him up earlier, putting him to bed earlier (elimiating the nap) or try having a more active morning.
My 3 year old son is contrary with naps and I don't really see a reason or rhyme to it - some days he goes down like a light and some days he just refuses point blank to sleep in the afternoon.
Follow his cues and think about elimating his nap on a trial basis with an earlier bedtime.

I keep my kids so bust they beg for naps. right b4 nap time maybe take him outside for an hour or 2 and wear him out. Swimming will work miracles. My kids both swim about 2 - 4 hours a day after which they sleep for 4 hours. They still sleep 12 hours a night too! There's never any fight. Maybe he just isn't tired yet.

You have to let him tire himself out before putting him down, try taking him to a park for at least an hour in the morning with lots of running and playing, and maybe move his naptime back an hour, white noise works well too, maybe try a fan or classical cd in his room and make the room dark as well. Then again, maybe its time for you to cut out his nap and make his bedtime a little earlier, unfortunately kids change, and so must thier routines. Good luck.

You know some days my 3 yr old does a great job of foing right to bed and going to sleep...other days he will lay in there and sing to himself, read books, play...basicallly do whatever but go to sleep. The bottom line is establish the routine. Be patient and give it a chance. More often than not he will start going to sleep before you know it.
You can try music and giving him a favorite toy (like a stuffed animal) You can lay with him for a hile to clam him down then leave him alone...but be consistent and patient.
Good Luck!!

Stop forcing him to nap. Obviously he isn't tired if it takes tyou two hours to get him to go to sleep. My daughter quit napping shortly after her first birthday. Once a day she liked to watch PBS's Bob Ross, he did paintings and for a half hour she would lie down and listen to him talk about what he was doing in the painting. After that she was up and going strong for the rest of the day until about 7:00pm.

Well, if he's not ready at the time YOU want him to be ready either get him up earlier so he will be sleepy later or wait a couple hours before you lay him down when he will be tired.. My 3 yr. old starts rubbing his eyes and eventually he's just crawl into bed or on the sofa when HE's ready to go to sleep... There's no fuss or trauma he's just ready.. Sometimes if he's being really good he lays in my bed and watches a cartoon until he dozes off...

I don't require my young grandchildren- who live with me- to sleep, but I do require that they rest quietly in their rooms for 2 hours. The almost 3 yr old girl usually falls asllep fairly quickly, but the almost 5 yr old boy rests while watching a children's video and sleeps about 1/2 the time. Keep to a regular schedule so they know what to expect. Meals, naptime , bath and bedtime should be scheduled so there are no surprises- kids really do like to know what to expect day by day. So, don't try to make him sleep, but do expect him to rest quietly in his room.

mine stopped taking naps (unless she needs it and falls alseep) but we have "quiet time" where the kids (3,2, 2 wks) go down for a nap and if they don't want to sleep they have to stay in their bed and read or play with stuffed animals quietly

Not ALL children require naps....................... My first stopped as soon as I put him in a youth bed (age 2). The next two continued taking naps up until they began school.
