It's a myth! The "crack" sound is air leaving your joints and allows for minor adjustments in the bone. These cracks can happen in knuckles, your spine, ect and generally feel nice because they allow for increased bone mobility. Each joint is contained in a small bag of special fluid called "synovial fluid." When you stretch or pull your joint to "crack" it, you are stretching the bag of fluid. As a result, a bubble of carbon dioxide gas is released inside the bag and a cracking noise is produced.
After you '"crack" or "pop" your knuckles, or any other joint in your body, it takes 10-15 minutes for the carbon dioxide to re-dissolve into the fluid. This is the reason you might have tried to crack your knuckles again immediately and didn't succeed

its a myth.
." There is no scientific evidence that cracking your knuckles leads to arthritis. However, it can't be good to repeatedly push a joint beyond its normal physical range. Besides that, it's annoying. Cracking your knuckles can cause a decrease in your grip but unless you're signing any multi-million dollar contracts as a pitcher, it's not worth giving up. But it's still annoying. "

There is so much debate on this subject-oh my goodness.
I have heard both ways and listened to so many arguments on the topic.
Some say it will give you artharitus and others say fat fingers, I personally, think that it is a myth.
I also think that scientists don't really know. Because if THEY are debating, it means there is not enough proof that it goes one way or the other.
Also, if it does, it is probably only one of many variables that can lead to that. Cracking your knuckles is definately not the only thing that could give you artharitus.
So, I say crack your knuckles if you feel like it-i do.

Well I'm 57 and have been cracking my knuckles since childhood, and I my knuckles have not become enlarged nor have they got arthritis. So I can only assume it is a myth.

My Chiropractor says that cracking your knuckles does not give you Arthritis, but it does make your finger joints "sloppy" and over time they can be loose. I have never asked him what loose knuckles would be like or what problems it would cause, so I do not know. I do know that I am 43 and have cracked my knuckles for over 30 years and I do not have arthritis.

No it is not a myth, but it will not give you arthritis either. It can cause spurs on your joints, and they can be really painfull, and sometimes have to be surgically removed. Just don't crack your knuckles!
