Here's my 2c worth. Difflam gargle or spray to coat and numb the throat. It will also take down the inflammation that is causing the pain.

when i get one, there are two possible causes ...

cause one always occurs with that "stuffed up" feeling in the nose and sinuses BUT no other symptoms [see cause two]. This is very likely an infection in my sinus and is usually caused by a virus. Antibiotics won't help me beat a virus. So I take a decongestant [pseudoephedrine HCl works well], plus 2000 units of Vitamin C four to six times a day, drink lots of water but no alcohol, blow my nose, keep warm, and wait out the two to three weeks of recovery. Continuing to work usually isn't a problem.

[discontinue the Vitamin C after it 'works' -- indicated by diarrhea.]

{If I ignore this stage, it usually becomes cause two.}

cause two involves heavy coughing and/or an unusual red color in the back of my throat [my wife looks to see the color, using my toothbrush as a tongue depressor with a flashlight]. This is a bacterial infection. The unusual red usually means strep throat. Heavy coughing, especially if there is dark color in the matter I'm coughing up, usually means bronchitius [infection in the lungs]. both of these require an antibiotic to defeat quickly. I go see my doctor to get the right one prescribed and then I follow his advice. Working is usually out for five days or so.

{Untreated bronchitius can become pneumonia, which leads to dehydration and possible death -- don't fool with it, go to the doctor.}

Topical remedies besides those mentioned above -- gargle with citrus juice ... orange is milder, grapefruit or lemonade harsher, and lime wicked. I swallow the juice after gargling with it -- my stomach will kill whatever the juice picks up and the vitamin C is good for me.

It could be strep throat. He should go to the doctor
ASAP. Meanwhile, gargle with salt water.
