because thinking for yourself is too much effort, and conformity is easy.
if your brought up to believe in a particular thing then its easier to go along rather than question. hence the security blanket syndrome that belief in god creates

Religions served very important functions for early societies:
- Explained natural phenomena that otherwise could not be understood
- Raised a hell of a lot of money
- Maintained order among illiterate masses so that the wealthy could enjoy their money
St. Peter's Cathedral was built with money for "indulgences" -- forgiveness PURCHASED from the church.
The faithful will always say, there are always bad eggs but the foundation of the church is strong. The problem is that the foundation of the church is what is the most corrupt. If the St Peter's example is too far in the past, then all you have to do is think of the pedophile priests who were protected.
Religious people today who are good people (and there are plenty of them) are THEMSELVES responsible for their own goodness. Hats off to them.

No, I know that I was brought up in a religion, and I no longer believe. Between the ages of 9 and 25 I was undecided, sometimes rejecting religion because it made no sense, sometimes turning to it, because I couldn't find any other way to deal with particular problems. Since then I have been an atheist. Many people try to brainwash kids, but few succeed. I don't know if any research has been done into the percentage of people who retain their childhood beliefs but few adults believe in Santa Claus!

I am really convinced that there is a load of self opinionated berks on this site tonight. I really do not wish it to be true.
But then I remember that I have had some entertaining moments and some really good laughs and I really do hope I can make that true.
You are assuming people do not think for themselves. I am assuming you are making judgement on something you no nothing about.
You are misguided, lack understanding and have absolutely no idea how shallow you sound otherwise a degree of intelligence I'm sure would have prompted you to refrain from listing this question.
Ignorance is bliss perhaps but knowalls talk out of their backsides.

Evolution does not deal with feelings or psychology or philosophy. Yet, each day decisions are made concerning these area that effect your life more than any factual knowledge. Faith is required in these areas. Evolutionist, deny Faith and make choices in logic. There is no logic to true love. How can you measure love by logic?

If doing "good acts" alone got people into Heaven then you may have a point...but....you don't get into Heaven just because of "good acts"...you must have FAITH, and , Love the Lord beyond yourself and everything else..and, that LOVE is what draws you to do good.
May you find Peace :).

No.
Some people do think for themselves, others don't.
"It"? What do you mean by "it"?
There are plenty of people who question what they believe. Some keep their beliefs, others change them.
"Vulnerable or scared" is simply playing the psychological card. It does not apply to all believers.
On the contrary, I do good acts out of gratitude to God for saving me.

The truth will make you free...
It isn't true we always believe in whatever we're taught as children..i now believe something different.
We are not assured of a place in heaven through doing good deeds...i believe in Salvation through Christ...The change takes place in the heart, not the head. : x )
Shalom

If you believe anything without question, then you're stagnating, stop growing, stop evolving. Ask questions about everything until you are satisfied. And when you're satisfied, ask more questions. Stagnation is the worst of all. You'll have to do everything again in your next life.
