Tanning on the beach is one of the better ways to get skin cancer. If it runs in your family, I'd lay off the sun for a while.
Skin naturally renews itself once every 28 days or so. You're only damaging the top skin cells, but the radiation seeps through.
To answer your question, it'll fade in time. People who normally tan or burn always lose it in time for this reason. It has to do with the layers of your skin. The epidermis is the top layer, then comes the dermis and then the hypodermis.

Notably, the epidermis has 5 layers to it.
The tan only affects the epidermis basically.
Things like tattoos go past to the dermis and that's why the dyes keep their place and don't 'wash off'.

Hope that helps.

They fade eventually. That's why people are obsessed with getting them all the time. =P

Tanning is actually very unhealthy. It's a sign of skin damage, NOT health, and should be avoided whenever possible. Always wear sunscreen if you're going to be outside for extended periods of time, and avoid tanning booths.
