The axis mundi,or tree of life, connects heaven and earth, as well as providing a path between the two.

"Inanna rescued the huluppu tree at the time of beginnings, "when what was needful had first come forth." Is it possible that the huluppu tree was among the "needful"? Perhaps the huluppu was the World Tree, which connects heaven, earth, and underworld (Campbell 1965: 486-89). In other mythologies, the World Tree usually has a serpent in its roots and often a bird in its branches (Campbell 1964: 41).

For myself, it is interesting to note how the snake, which has been so vilified in Christianity, is the bearer of infinite wisdom as female energy, or Kundalini, in Vedic texts. This "snake" rests coiled in the roots of our own world tree microcosm, our body, in the sacrum. When the seeker awakens her and those energies begin to rise, the closed gates that keep us separate from our own innate knowledge are opened, and when utterly realized, enlightenment is upon you.

Yes, a tree can give a degree of enlightenment. Trees, like many of God's creations, always obey God (see Matthew 21:19 - http://scriptures.lds.org/en/matt/21/19#19 ), so they must be in line with Truth. If a being has Truth, then they can contribute to enlightenment (just like we humans can help teach some of what we know about Truth).

I once was very upset and sat under a tree. At one point, suddenly I felt comforted, and that I could go home, and everything would be alright. Now, I don't know if that was an angel or the tree that gave me that feeling. In either case, ultimately, it is God that gives enlightenment... and sometimes the tree (or the angel) may serve God as the conduit, bringing enlightenment to God's beloved children (us).

All truth comes from the Source... and we (and other beings of light and truth) are the "hands of heaven on earth" (ie servants of the One who loves us all).

Love and Peace. xo

Dear Magnolia,

Yes I do love trees n plants.

Coming to ur question, No trees do not give you enlightenment.

Having said that, lets see how and why trees have attained this state of respect. Trees have unique properties as in their usefulness in form of wood, leaves, roots, flowers and fruits. Trees have medicinal qualities too. So being around trees certainly benefits one's state in terms of consciousness and health. Krishna similied himself to a peepal tree in srimadbhagvadgita, due to the qualities of the peepal.

Trees can create a pure environment to aid meditation and enhance positive energies, in this way trees are helpful but saying that a tree gives you enlightenment would be wrong as enlightenment comes from within.

thanks

Well a tree can preach the Dharma. The tree is a wonder full symbol, Buddha realised enlightenment under one, Christ was nailed to one, and I have over 100 in this yard and I do love them and all trees. When a monk asked a zen master "why did Bodhidharma go west" he was told *the cypress tree in the courtyard*. Every one is enlightened it is just that some know it and others don't. ~*~

Ahem... Buddha got the enlightenment WHILE UNDER the Pipal tree... he did not get it FROM the Pipal tree.

Enlightenment can only "come from" a source greater than oneself. A tree is not greater than a human... oh Lord I HOPE you don't think that, anyways!

Sure, I love a tree.. it's leaves, shape, beauty, etc. But I do not love it as an object to be WORSHIPPED. If anything, I prefer to worship the CREATOR of that tree, GOD!

And my dinner is now called BURNED!!!

Yes a tree can. Trees have great qualities
which we all human don't have in us. From the
birth & upto death we all remain in touch with them.
They keep on helping us throughout our life.
They protect us from sun & rain. Fruit to eat,
wood for furniture, paper, fuel & for cremation
etc. Birds make nest on them, animal take shelter
from them. Saving from floods, eradicating soil erosion,
balancing the nature by accepting carbon dioxide &
exhausting oxygen for all creations on the earth are
very few examples where they contribute. They obey
the natural rules shaped by Him. Now the next thing
is that after giving to whole, what they demand from us.
Nothing- Nothing. Their work is to give & give in each &
every condition. Is this type of nature do we have, No, No & No
If we all be able to adopt such type of nature without any
selfishness & cruelty that the trees have,
to help & help others then this world will become
Heaven for all . Joy & happiness will be on all faces.

It needent be a tree, It can even be a stone that enlightens.

Dont forget that God is Omnipresent and She/He can give you enlightment in any way God Thinks it to be right.

Speaking Advitha, Enlightment is a more personal experience, which shows the God in you.

Buddha got Enlightment sitting under a tree. He did not get enlightment because of the tree.

Purandaradasa was enlightened through a Diamond Stud.
Ramana Maharishi got Enlightment through his Dreams.

What a fabulous question, just because it provokes so many fabulous answers. ;-)))

You've all said it all, so i am going to let it rest, but Michelle V., well .... what can I say ? You've been off too, well welcome back, you certainly came back with a 'bang' !

Oh, and yes, I do love trees, in fact my only begotten son is a tree-surgeon ! I love them all, but I do have a special penchant for the willow in the temperate zones, and here where I live the Flamboyants are out in bloom, that brilliant scarlet is truly the 'Dragon' colour. For two or three months a year the Caribbean blazes.

Fabulous. :-)))

Yes Tulsi Tree also know as Holy basil or Tulali devi is a pure devotee of Kirshna in the form as a tree. She can remove all the sins of anyone who just sees her, touches her, comes to the house where she resides or waters her, or places her dust upon their head. She may look like a tree or plant, but she is a pure devotee and Pure Goddess and expansion of Sri mati Radhrani. she is also known as Vrinda devi and resides in Vrindavan She is the protector of all plants and creepers. We pray to her every morning. We offer her leaves and flowers (manjaries) to Lord Kirsna, because Krishna doesn't like to accept anything without Tulasi leaves or manjaries. Because she is the Queen of Bhakti also known as Bhakti devi. (the queen of devotion) She has many names and to get the blessings of such a pure devotee is the greatest blessing. I aspire to love her. But I really know nothing of Love I am too fallen to even know what true love is. TRead Appreciating Vrendavan Dham by Maha Nidi Swami. Explains about her in great detail. Ohh that book is nectar.

Enlightenment can be got from someone who is itself/himself/herself/oneself already enlightened. Tree is inferior to animals while animals are inferior to humans in the level of development of the consciousness of the Self. So how can a tree give enlightenment? And who said that Buddhaa got enlightenment from a tree? No one said that. We should be serious while contemplating about such serious issues and not jump to conclusions and proof our own shallowness, immaturity and ignorance.

Enlightenment can be got only from GOD, the supreme Cosmic consciouness. And Buddha got it from God and not from any Tree. It was only a matter of chance that at that point he was sitting under a tree (obviously he sat there for some respite from the scorching sun which shines so hot for 8 months in India). The tree is revered and loved for the same reason that you or me would love and revere things/places/times specially associated with anyone whom we love and adore.

I would like to share with all of you another important point. As per Hindu philosophy, all things emanate from them certain rays etc (very difficult to express in English as there are no proper words available) and it forms a field like the shape of an egg around that particular thing. That field is called AURA. Saints or persons who are highly evolved spiritually emit very positive rays. Their AURA extends to several metres around them. All things that come into close contact with them come to absorb some amount of this positive rays or aura element. Even after these saints and spiritually evolved persons have left that place or thing the effect continues to remain for several years. So in Hindus we also revere and adore the places and things associated with such saints. The Bodhi Tree is adored for so many reasons and called Mahabodhi signifying this adoration and respect.
