Most Staes won't allow this because of the liability factor, you actually need to be already enrolled in a Criminal Justice Program in College. Even then a "ride-along" as you describe it will be tough to approve. Go through the classes , get to an academy, then you ride as a trainee. In the meantime, speak with Criminal Justice Professors, see if your local Police Department will let you take a tour, and ask questions with those officers.

I'd love to go for a police ride, but apparently if you aren't in the process of being hired/in a specific police program you're to much of a liability for legal reason to ride along.

Lame.

Yes, they can be fun.

I highly recommend them for everyone, even if you aren't interested in a career of law enforcement. It will show you how the police really work and will help to do away with any misconceptions you may have.

ploice work is not fun. it is a very thankless job with tremendous pressures. a ride along will pass before you realize it.police seldom have time to patrol any more. they are busy answering calls. from the time the come on duty till they get off they will be answering calls

That sounds great! How does one go about doing something like that.

We're in Houston. Any ideas?

I would love for my son to see policework in action, and not just from the tv.

Thanks.
