Whats the difference?

Thanks, and yes this was a serious question... because I'm Catholic, and my dad's Christian and I've never seen and difference religiously, except mine has always been a lot more strict, and my dad seems to have looser morals on drinking and sex.

Is this a serious question? Catholics are a Christian denomination; if my memory serves me well, Catholics actually constitute the largest Christian denomination in the world. The word is Greek, and means universal. Therefore, one could validly argue that every Christian is catholic (lower case is important here). However, Catholic has come to mean affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church whose head is the Pope who is also the Bishop of Rome.

"What separates us as believers in Christ is much less than what unites us." (Pope John XXIII)

Almost all important doctrine is completely agreed upon between Catholic Christians and other Christians.

Here is the joint declaration of justification by Catholics (1999), Lutherans (1999), and Methodists (2006):

By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works.

There are many minor doctrine issues and some major cultural traditional differences which, I believe, do not matter that much.

A Catholic worships and follows Christ in the tradition of Catholicism which, among other things, recognizes that Christ made Peter the leader of His new Church and Pope Benedict XVI is Peter's direct successor.

With love in Christ.

Catholicism is the roots of ALL Christianity!
The Bible was translated into Latin by Catholics.
INCLUDING the ten commandments!
The head of the Catholic church is the Pope.
Who is the appointed spokesperson for the Catholic Christian church.
The Queen of England is the head off the Protestant Christian church.
And she is the moral guide for Christian protestants.
So what is the difference?
Henry 8th!
All other Christian faiths are spin offs of the two above.

My personal belief..Catholicism is a denomination of Christianity. Some denominations disagree on some things, but agree on the main things, which are---
Believing in Jesus as Saviour: He is the Son of God, came to earth, gave up His life on the cross for our sins, was resurrected on the 3rd day..come under the banner of Christianity.
Hope this helps ...God Bless xxx

Catholics are Christians. As a matter of fact, we are the first Christians.

In Catholicism we say we have the fullness of the TRUTH. That means that at every Catholic Mass JESUS is PRESENT BODY, BLOOD, SOUL, AND DIVINITY.

Protestants will usually acknowledge that their beliefs are in Baptism, prayer, and the Bible. They will say that THE HOLY EUCHARIST is just symbolic.

JESUS is of course the source and summit of all CHRISTianity, and JESUS is present in the HOLY EUCHARIST.

Also most protestants will say "only the Bible" . .. but Catholics believe that JESUS is our HEAD and therefore we are lead in the HOLY SPIRIT to all TRUTH.

There's a lot written about this. - The fullness of the TRUTH.

There's a lot more to said about this as well you could look up my other posts or try a Catholic Website for more on what Catholics believe I'll put two in my source list.

-LOVE your neighbor as yourself.
Amen.

Christians worship Jesus...
Catholics worship Jesus and mother Mary, and Saint whoevershowupnext....

Oh and before you start believing all that about how the Catholic is the oldest sect..........

The Eastern Orthodox Church (including Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, etc.) refers to the single, theologically unified, multinational Christian community that views itself as:

The historical, unbroken continuation of the original Christian communities established by Jesus Christ and the Twelve Apostles, having maintained unbroken the link between its clergy and the Apostles by means of Apostolic Succession and Sacred Tradition.
The ecclesial communion which has never fallen into error nor deviated from the beliefs and traditions of the original Christian body, but rather has gone to great lengths to preserve them for future generations. All theological concepts, all explanations and expansions are compared to and validated by the original core beliefs; no deviation is allowed.
The Christian body which most closely adheres to the canons of the first seven ecumenical councils held between the 4th and the 8th centuries.

Catholics cannot have protected sex.
Catholics believe that The Virgin Mary should be prayed to, as well as Jesus and God, whereas Christians don't believe this.
Catholics aren't allowed to have sex before marriage either..
Catholics aren't even allowed to ejaculate before marriage either, so no "self-help" or help from someone else..
In this day and age, it is rare to find people who still hold this values/traditions, but some still do!
