The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks. The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen. Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter. Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred. While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies. Mating only takes a few minutes, if they are both cooperative, but mating should end in a 'tie' that usually lasts from 5 to 20 minutes. However, after mating, the male will relax a while before trying again..Therefore, if he was still excited, they had not yet mated. If they were still jumping around, they were flirting (teasing) and had not yet mated. hope i helped! =]

The rule of thumb a breeder uses is,7days coming in heat,7 days in heat, and 7 days going out of heat. She will accept a male in the last 14 days of the cycle......George

Usually about a week; however, please take this dog to a vet for spaying as soon as possible. Also, ask the vet when you take the dog for shots. My first dog was a dachsound and they are just great dogs. There is no doubt. But unless she is purebred and you plan to breed her for show dogs, please have her spayed immediately after her first heat. She will be happier and so will you.
