The reason you need faith to believe in God is because He doesn't exist in the physical realm, which modern people usually call "reality."
People thought much differently in the distant past. From the time of Plato and Aristotle until the 16th or 17th century, western people were generally Solipsists. This means they believed their subjective experience actually was reality. Furthermore, solipsists believed that the physical realm was actually an illusion created by their mind. In those days, hallucinations were thought to be absolutely real, and the existence of God was as obvious as your own imagination. The Dark Ages of Solipsism were technologically stagnet precisely because the physical realm was mistakenly believed to be an illusion. Beginning in the early 17th century, the physics of Galileo and Newton unequivocally proved that the physical realm is absolutely real. The unsubstantiated speculations of Aristotle turned out to be completely false. The truth is that the physical realm actually is real and each person's subjective experience is a virtual experience created by their mind, based on limited sensory evidence of the nature of reality and modulated by personal expectation. In other words, in modern times the physical has become real and subjective experience is considered completely virtual -- a construction of the brain.
Now, please notice that God continues to exist where He has always existed, in the subjective experience of true believers. In the Solipsistic past, such subjective experience was considered real, but not anymore. Notice also that God does not exist where He has never existed, in the physical realm. In our Scientific present, the physical realm is known to be unquestionably real, quite unlike the past. By redefining what civilization considers "reality" we have also redefined whether God can actually exist or must be considered a figment of our imagination.
Why do you need faith to believe in God? Because the facts suggest He exists in the subjective experience of the faithful and does not exist in physical reality. Two things are obvious:
a) Without blind faith, belief is impossible.
b) For a man of truth, atheism is is inevitable.

D'ya know what amazes me? How much time people spend talking about god, whether they believe in god or not. If god is a concept.... does that require faith? Are we negotiating definitions with the bearded-guy-in-the-sky followers? You can't save willingly ignorant people from their own ignorance... so the only point is to show them how irritating proselytizing is. Read some Richard Dawkins and quit trying to irritate the fundies.... They're really not worth arguing with. As for the he/she/it above me that suggested reading the Bible... I've read four different versions cover to cover and Christianity makes much less sense to me than it did before I read it. I'm now a recovering christian. I have to say the same about my readings of the Quran and the Book of Mormon... interesting stuff, great theories... but all we have are concepts from the hawkers of concepts.... and where is their bread and butter at?

A student need to have faith and trust in his teacher also, if he wants to learn a language. If he argues with the teacher about 'K' in knife, he can never learn English.
In this materialistic world there are certain things where we learn by trust and faith, there are some we learn by experience, and there are some we know by the logic of science. But in the spiritual world, Faith is the only criteria. Because our intellectual capabilities are limited and we want to know the unlimited!

Well it was written by men.
You need faith to believe in something you can't see with your eyes.
Without faith how can you believe in a God?
One day all will be clear.

God doesnt do out of the ordinary things like crack the clouds to show his face or anything of that nature or close to it. But, he does work miracles. Like the the Bible says, "God moves in mysterious ways." The Bible also says that faith is basically required in your walk with God. The Bible says that faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. If you dont have faith in God, you wont be able to receive power for your life. And if you dont have power for your life, then you wont be able to make a difference or a dynamic change in your life on this earth or eternally . When you also believe in God, you have to also believe that Jesus is also God . Jesus is God the son, the Holy Ghost is God the Holy Spirit, and the one who called himself "I am that I am" is God the Father. They are called the Trinity. Also, you must believe that Jesus died on the cross, he was born of a virgin(Mary), and that he rose on the third day with all power in his hands. And these three things are the foundation of your salvation, if you want to go to heaven. To go to heaven , you must be a saved christian.

The definiton of Faith:
1. confidence or trust in a person or thing: faith in another's ability.
2. belief that is not based on proof: He had faith that the hypothesis would be substantiated by fact.
3. belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings of religion: the firm faith of the Pilgrims.
4. belief in anything, as a code of ethics, standards of merit, etc.: to be of the same faith with someone concerning honesty.
5. a system of religious belief: the Christian faith; the Jewish faith.
6. the obligation of loyalty or fidelity to a person, promise, engagement, etc.: Failure to appear would be breaking faith.
7. the observance of this obligation; fidelity to one's promise, oath, allegiance, etc.: He was the only one who proved his faith during our recent troubles.
8. Christian Theology. the trust in God and in His promises as made through Christ and the Scriptures by which humans are justified or saved.
As defined by the dictionary, there is no other way to believe in God UNLESS you have Faith...the belief in something without proof.
If you look around you and really contemplate the way the world works, the way thing could be different if one species was gone, the way the Earth moves like clockwork, the birth of a baby, how animals adapt and play their roles in the Universe, etc etc.
These are things that we witness everyday that show us there is a God.
Man could definitely have not done something so magnificent. I'm not a Christian either, mind you...I'm just a believer and when certain things fall into place for me, or I witness something amazing, I know there is a God.

Because god is a being of faith, and proof denies faith, and god promptly disappears in a puff of logic.
