I heard that white is the official colour of mourning. Not black. Is this true?

Unless you are from a different culture than the U.S., black is what you wear to a funeral. It has always been the appropriate color of respect. I have never seen anyone wear white to a funeral nor should they.

White is considered disrespectful to the deseased family. The expected color is black, the color for mourning, but navy and gray will work too. India's color for mourning is white, so showing up to an Indian wedding in white would be bad. Depends on the culture, but if the funeral is in the U.S., I wouldn't wear white. Besides, if you wear white, you'll stand out, and you probably don't want to do that.

I agree with ras.designs: It depends on the cultural background of the deceased and his/her family. In some non-western cultures (China, Japan, India) white is the colour of morning, but in western cultures (e.g., Europe, Canada, USA) black or subdued colours, such as navy and grey, are considered appropriate attire for funerals. Also, if the deceased belonged to a Christian denomination, black or something similar would be the proper choice.

You should only wear white to a funeral if you are a child or person under 21. Otherwise it's in bad taste--yes, even in the summer heat.

The only person that wears white is the deceased if they were a young bride, or young child in a Holy Communion Dress or a young virtuous girl.

It's more traditional to wear black. It might be considered rude if you showed up wearing white.
