Imagine yourself in your car, driving down the street on the map. When you come up to an intersection, which way would the turn go? Make a mark on the map to indicate your turn direction so you can check it while you're traveling. I usually use R or L circled, so I can quickly check upcoming turns.

I must concur with Randy C also..... North is always at the top of the map. I normally print the map only if I have a fairly good working knowledge of where I am driving to, otherwise I go with turn by turn directions and a map print out as well. I find that I don't get lost often at all and learn where I am going and use land marks to remember an area instead of using a mobile GPS system that doesn't always have the roads I am searching for... actually not too many map servers have the roads I am looking for as I drive for a construction supply company and most of the subdivisions I deliver to aren't mapped.... I still find Yahoo works the best.

Maps are usually shown with north to the top. That way you can orient yourself and figure out which way to turn etc.
