What was the motive for this white lie? Was anyone harmed? Love your mother, but where did she get this idea? Some older ethnic people have a tendency to be this way. Your mother obviously has alot of respect for the priest, but she should not make you feel guilty about this. Your mother wants you to be a good person, but she is wrongfully judging you. Don't feel too guilty, you can always tell him the truth. A baseball game is for the layperson not the religious. Priest should have some enjoyment, but they are supposed to do good works and be closer to God. They are servants of God just like all his true believers. The game should not matter to him really if he is a priest; however, if you committed a crime of murder and lied about this, then you would be not only guilty of murder but also lying about the murder. The book of revelation mentions liars but that has to do with people leading others astray, condemning the innocent, going against God, and so forth. It is lying on an extreme level. Only God can say if a person is going to hell or not. If a person gives a lot of money to the church, it does not mean that he/she is going to heaven. Next time you see him tell him the truth and apologize saying that you made a mistake, but do this because you are a gentlemen or a well mannered person. Have a great day.

The snapdragon is bitchy, but has a point.

And you're only going to Hell if the sin is mortal AND unrepented. How that kind of lie could be serious enough for a mortal sin is beyond me; that it was to a priest is NOT relevant, tho I'm pretty sure your sainted mother thinks it is.

Seriously, I'd try to go to confession to that very priest. If after you confess your deception he can stop laughing long enough to give you absolution, you can report that back to your mother. Remember, it's only the priest who has to respect the seal of confession; it doesn't exist for the penitent.

well, no you're not going to hell. It doesn't matter if you lie to me or the president it's still a lie. Now if you lie lie lie and your life is not with God; the bible then yes you will go to hell b/c you're not "saved." I used to be catholic and when I was of age (18) I converted to Christianity/non denomination. I don't understand how confessing sins to a priest can get me to heaven, I confess my sins to the Lord himself. He is the only one that can judge me and forgive me.

It's not up to your mom whether you're going to hell or not. She can send you to your room, but not to hell. Aren't you glad? 8^)

She really means that you shouldn't lie, that's all. She wants you to be honest, the kind of kid she can be proud of. There are times when it's better to lie, but mostly its always a good idea to be truthful.

Is this a serious question?

Why did you lie to a priest about a game on TV, anyway? Tell us more.

u are not supposed to lie, but you are not going to hell just because u lied to a priest... anyways why do u need to say stuff to a priest when u can pray to God and talk to God?!

Well, that was not right. you were wrong to lie to the priest. It is serious but as a priets if you ask sincerely for forginveness he/she will forgive you. Your Mom is just trying to enfore that it's not good to lie. If you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior (christianity) God promises everlasting life. (John 3:16) he saves you, but you must believe it with all your heart.

All sins are forgiveable my child.

Now if you missed church to see the game, just think one hour on Sunday with God is much better.

Now if you lie constantly about your sins, God and the priest does see your heart, and if this continues, why bother with confession?

To tell a lie is to brake one of the Ten Commandments. If you stand before God on the day of Judgment a lier then you could go to Hell. You my want to seek a Savor ( Jesus )
