My favorite HBO series "Big Love" shows the struggle of how Mormons today have to hide their polygamy on a daily basis. Officially the church no-longer recognizes polygamous marriages but it was the founders of The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints that brought the practice of polygamy to the Western World and most specifically the United States in the 1830's.

Tom Hanks is the Executive Producer of Big Love and I was wondering if he is LDS. I am sure that LDS is using Big Love as a tool to mainstream polygamous marriages so that if it becomes legal under the law then their church can once again practice polygamy freely without having to have Christians tell them they can't. I am a Christian but if polygamy was recognized as a legal form of marriage in the United States I may begin to think more like a Mormon. After all whilst one wife is having PMS issues you could go to the next but then as the Beach Boys say, "God Only Knows."

I knew that I might get a few youth that would be mixed up about the entire polygamy/ Mormon issue so I have some links here that will help those that think that Mormons don't practice polygamy understand some of the facts.

No, Thomas Jeffrey Hanks Esq., the Executive Producer of HBO's hit, "Big Love" is not a Mormon himself. He was at one time a member of the Latter Day Saint church, one of the many divisions of Mormonism that was founded on polygamy.

Today LDS Mormons are embarrassed by polygamy and try to hide the fact that Mormonism was founded on it. Clearly, without polygamy the Mormon church would not exist today.

The First President and Founder of LDS, Joseph Smith, created polygamy as a "moral" way to take several lovers. He had 34 wives.

It was also Smith who started the "child bride" facet of Mormonism by taking teenage brides as young as 14.

The Second President of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints, Brigham Young was the worse recorded with 51 wives and 56 children.

The Third President of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (1880-1887) had 7 wives and 35 children

The Fourth President of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (1889-1898) had 6 wives.

The Fifth President of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (1898-1901) had 10 wives.

The Sixth President of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (1901-1918) had 48 children between his 6 wives.

The Seventh President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (1918-1945) only had 3 wives and 8 children.

highly doubtful... would a Mormon play a role like Tom Hanks did in The Davinci Code? probably not.
Tom Hanks has a great deal with his production company & HBO & they work together on a lot of movies and miniseries.
Just because he produces something doesn't mean he is of that denomination. He just knows it will get ratings & bring in cash.

That's my favorite show too.

Although I don't think Tom Hanks is LDS and I don't think they're using the show to forward an agenda or anything--after all, most voters don't have cable.

By the way, in Big Love, those Mormons are Fundamentalists--NOT mainstream.

Mormonism isn't the only religion that practices polygamy.

It is also practiced in Islam. But I know that Mr. Hanks isn't a Muslim. You would have to find a web site with famous Mormons to see if he is a Mormon.

CNN is the best news resource for studying polygamy in both the Mormon and Islamic religions!

Actually, mainstream mormons are embarassed by those kind of shows and would probably rather not have them on. Those are off-shoot cults of mormonism.

I don't think Tom Hanks is LDS...

I don't know about Brother Hanks but only traditional Mormons practice polygamy these days. The FLDS is the traditional group of Mormons.

I have always felt sorry for Mormons not being able to practice their polygamy openly because even if the LDS group don't do it any longer it is a major facet of their religion as a whole. As you have stated their founders also founded American polygamy.

Tom Hanks is not LDS. Mormons (LDS people) do not practice polygamy. Gladys Knight is a Mormon/LDS.

Are you asking whether Tom Hanks is LDS? I don't know.

Are you asking whether the LDS church is bringing back polygamy? Definitely not

Are you asserting that the LDS church has any control over programming on HBO? I don't think so.

Are you saying that you want to be a polgymast? Then you want the FLDS church - not the mainstream LDS church.
