Mormons where I come from always talk about how there is a special light in there eyes, and spirit about them, and how people outside of Utah are not as happy as them. Can you identify a Mormon by how happy they are and the light they give?

I never thought they were any happier; it’s just that all the Mormons I am around claim that because they have the truth and the spirit they are happier.

Maybe this is part of cultural conditioning. Utah existed as it's own entity for decades and flourished quite well, and added to the mormons opinion of themselves as 'chosen' people.

Added with the more recent sunday school conditioning where mormons are portrayed as "happy because of the gospel", you have the making of a modern myth and stereotype.

Don't forget the additional responsibility of always seeking after unreachable worthiness and perfection, and the result is a culture of sexually repressed Xanex dependent nutcakes (a combination of 'nutcase' and 'fruitcake' my spell checker has issues with) that are happy and nice.

No problem here.

I have never saw a special light or spirit about them and I grew up a Mormon in an all Mormon community. They were not especially jolly people, just your average Joes. They are a little more superstitious and kind of Chicken Little "the sky is going to fall" people. Glen Beck on CNN is a Mormon. Watch him for a few weeks and you'll see it, I think. They change their religious beliefs to what is fashionable, or what can set them apart from other Christians. They say the Bible is true as far as it is translated correctly so that gives them plenty of leeway in what they believe. They believe anything their leadership tells them to believe. That is a potentially dangerous thing to do. I have a slight fear of a Jim Jones repeat.

That doesn't make sense to me. What if I don't live in Utah, am not a Mormon, but still have a special light in my eye, etc? It seems like I could get the same look from other activities. (Due to the restrictions about inappropriate content, I will refrain from going into explicit detail of the activity that comes to mind).

Dear Fox-
You really shouldn't confuse the poor non-LDS folks here. Remember, you have to dumb-down the gospel for them to understand...

Sorry- what she said WAS pretty funny!..

All jests aside- Theoretically, yes, you should be able to identify a Mormon simply by how happy they are. But the world we live in isn't that way.

Some Mormons deal with depression (which is a sucky condition no matter how you look at it!), some deal with crappy jobs, some occasionally just have a bad day.... Nobody is "always happy."

I like to think there is a confidence, an assurance that comes with the teachings of the LDS faith, but again, as one answer said, "Isn't it pretty to think so."

No.

I am not Mormon, but my parents are and what you are dealing with is a stereotype. Yes, there seems to be plenty of Mormons that are happy all the time, but I have found plenty of people in other religions that fit that description as well.

Not all mormons live in Utah. We're secretly hiding out everywhere and yes the only way you can ideny is by the sparkle in our eyes. NOT don't be gullable. Mormons are humans too. At least thats what we tell people.

you wouldn't be able to tell i'm mormon.

especially when i'm throwing one back and drawing in a nice long inhale of good 'ol american tobacco.

i once was a rabid mormon, until I realized there is more to this life than serving the church. I can do more by serving others directly, as jesus did; than I can do by slaving away for a church.

Can you identify any person's religious identity by their emotions at any given time? No. You can not. No. It is impossible. I am sure there are psychological and/or sociological studies that would confirm my answer. Common sense seems to dictate that you can not identify a person's religious beliefs simply from their emotional display at any given time.

No you can't. They do not produce a group of people that are all happy.
Go to the psych ward and see how many teenagers and women are happy in there.
