My cats love the tab rings off of mild cartons, and the plastic pulls from concentrated juice cans, and the little plastic tabs that come out of bottles like vegetable oils and also from the milk and juice cartons that have the spouts in the middle. But my cats all time favorite toy I got as a free gift when I ordered the Hurcules Hooks. I got one of those level laser lights. We have to play several games a day and at night before they let me go to bed. They know what the object looks like and that this is the thingy that makes the light and they will push it over to me or knock it off of the coffee table to make me or any guest that comes in the apartment play with them. They never tire of this game. My son thought it was cruel to them but then he realized that this was the same as them stalking a nice little wild fuzzy furry creepy crawley as we called them in the mountains. But their absolutely most favorite non commercial toys are the plastic grocery bags. They put their heads in them and then push the bag all over the floor with it sometimes one of the other cats will jump on them and attempt to steal the play pretty. They like all card board boxes and paper bags, back packs, and duffle bags and luggage. I spend most of my day laughing at their wonderful antics.

Mine love catnip fresh from the plant during the summer and dried during the winter. I crochet balls that I stuff with catnip wrapped in old nylons and then add a curly tail by making a chain and working 3 DC in each chain. Another good toy is a magazine insert (the subscription cards) folded like a paper hat until it stays in a little triangle shape.

Mine love something as simple as a small screwed up foil ball. In fact they love this more than any toy from a store. They will bat them around for hours. They love plastic bottle caps too.

Some of our cats love to play fetch, too. Favorites include those plastic rings from water bottles, a wadded-up piece of paper or in our kitten's case, *anything* that can be thrown across the room & carried in his mouth.
They also love playing with paper bags, cardboard boxes & my hair.

They like paper bags and cardboard boxes to crawl into. Also, crinkled up paper made into a ball. Twist ties. The ring from a gallon milk jug - not the cap, but the ring that is at the bottom of it.

My cat loves to play with paper that I have taken and rolled up in a ball and I will throw them up in the air and the cat will jump up and bat at the paper and she will push them around the room. Or I will roll up my clean socks and I will do the same thing and she will push them to the other end of the room. I have a cat tent for my cat and she likes to play hide in go seek with me and she will hide in her tent. It has ears on it and whiskers and a tail on it and my cat will play with the whiskers on it and the tail.
My cat will get on the side of her tent and push it across the room or she will get behind it and she will do the same thing.
One other thing she likes is the paper bags that you get from the store and she will jump on it or run across the room and push the bag across the room from inside the bag.

First off, you shouldn't be smoking around your kitties, they deserve clean air and healthy lungs. They can get asthma, allergies, heart disease, emphazema and lung cancer too. Kitties don't deserve that!
Okay, I'm off my soap box...
My littlest cat LOVES twist ties! You know from bread wrappers and stuff? If I make a little spring out of them she will play fetch with me for hours...yes, that's right I said my cat plays fetch. It was all her idea. I throw the toy she brings it back and drops it in my hand. Over and over and over and over....just like a dog. She loves plastic spoons too. She's learned to pat the spoon end to make the whole thiing flip up in the air then she carries it around and she loves hampster balsa wood chews. I just wish she'd learn to prop it up between her paws like a dog does, she'd have more fun with it. ...yes, she's a weird one.

My cat goes crazy over a lazer pointer, but that requires your attention. They make those shiny pompom balls and they're called Mylar balls. My other cat likes chasing these little mice with catnip insides.
