The answer depends on your nationality, what airport you are travelling to, and where your flight is going to and where it is coming from.

Most airports have holding areas. Where you can check into your next flight without coming through customs and "into" Canada. Not enough info here to tell.

Here is a list of countries that need a visa. If your country needs a visa, then all that changes is the type of visa. What you are talking about would be a transit visa.

You should call your airline and ask this I do not believe you need a visa. The website below says you need one if you are staying in Canada for up to 48 hrs, but does not specifically answer your question.
