...and that the message of God is merely a ruse to get us to go into the light?
I've seen Pascal's wager here so often, which got me thinking about the converse. What if the light is really a tortuous end to our souls?

Pascal's Wager says why take the chance at being wrong about god. I'd say this is a valid (albeit exaggerated) concern

Teenripa, you made my point for me. What if the bible is propaganda to lure us to our death.

If God is good, then why does he kill so frequently? Floods, plagues, etc...

Shane, you are quoting from the bible. The very thing that my postulate here is saying to be weary of. Of course the bible would say that heaven is good which is the whole idea of my premise.

That's an interesting concept. Have you researched Gnosticism at all? This early Christian group believed that the earth was created by an evil demi-urge. They also believed that there was a supreme god behind him.
With a bit of effort, you could back your scenario up with some good quotes.
Nice try on getting people to think more openly. And they wonder why they're called brainwashed....

If, to quote most religious people, "most everyone believes in god" then when someone says:
"I think if it was it would be the wider gate and not the narrow one that lets in few"
Who is going through the 'wide gate'? The believers or the disbelievers???
Interesting idea.
I always wondered if the light at the end of the tunnel was an oncoming train.

I think if it was it would be the wider gate and not the narrow one that lets in few.
Don't forget that Jesus said "Wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction(Hell), and there are many who go in by it. Because Narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life(Heaven), and there are few who find it."
He also said that not all that call Him Lord(that is Christians) will enter the narrow gate.
There are no reliable sources that say that Heaven is a giant soul eater.
There are however many things like the Bible that point to Heaven as being Eternal Paradise.
Even if Heaven was a soul eater I'd still rather go into it than into the eternal suffering of hell.

What an intriguing premise! It would be like sitting in church and suddenly realizing that your pastor bears an uncanny resemblance to Rod Serling... "a dimension not of sight and sound, and certainly not of mind."
At least one of the writers of one of the booklets which the committee selected for inclusion in the Bible claimed that Satan is wily and relentlessly seeking to trick and ensnare us poor guillible mortals. Maybe that was just a wink-wink from heaven to see if anyone would catch it.
On this one, I'll have to go with the great prophet Steve Martin: "I guess I wouldn't believe in ANYthing if it weren't for my lucky astrology mood watch."

Personally, I think heaven is the booby prize to get you to take a few more cracks at that carnival game for a just few more bucks.
But if it was a giant soul eater, then I'm glad I didn't follow it. My soul would go where the rational people's souls went (assuming there is a soul to begin with).

Brilliant question! It's a shame that it's just going over the heads of the believers. You say "what if the bible is just a lure for you to sacrifice your soul to some soul-eating monster"... and the people say "well, the bible tells us that it's leading us to heaven......" Uhhh... DUH! Any good con man trying to persuade anyone is going to say that what they're selling you is great...... and then you wake up in a bathtub full of ice and your kidneys are gone.

If you believe in the Holy Bible, then you know Heaven is good, and I'll tell you why if you'll listen.
It says, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning." KJV
So, there is no variableness with God. In other words, if He's good on earth, then He's good in Heaven, and is good to those that follow Him in both earth and Heaven. There's no ifs, ands or buts.
So don't worry.

hey ... this is my email avril990@yahoo.com ,, i want to talk to you about one of your answers :
You are wrong, here is a cut/paste from the quran (what's the deal with the fingers... yikk!!):
Sura 8:12,13 Muslims are instructed to cut the necks and fingers of those who opposed God and to never turn their back on unbelievers: "Remember thy Lord inspired the angels (with the message): 'I am with you: give firmness to the believers. I will instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. Smite ye above their necks and smite all their fingertips off them. This because they contended against God and His Apostle. If any contend against God and his Apostle, God is strict in punishment ... O ye who believe! When ye meet the unbelievers in hostile array, never turn your backs to them. If any do turn his back to them on such a day –unless it be in a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own) – he draws on himself the wrath of God, and his abode is hell, – an evil refuge (indeed)! It is not ye who slew them; it was God."
Source(s):
PS, Sura 2:216 says something similar, but I didn't feel the need to paste it here.
