I burned a avi video clip on a CD-R and tried to play it on my TV via the DVD player, but it tells me to check disc ~ that there is an error . . . etc. I burned photos on a CD-R and it played through my DVD player. Why won't the video clip? And how can I do it?

DVD-Video movies are encoded in MPEG-2. You will need to convert your AVI file to DVD-video. There are lots of conversion programs. I've used Nero and been pretty happy with it.

It appears your DVD player is capable of recognizing photos on a disk whether it is a DVD or CD. Second, read the manual find out what kind of DVD disc your player can read. Essentially there are two formats, DVD -R and DVD +R. Movies are made on special DVDs they all DVD players can read(almost all so to speak). Let's put it this way, if you bought a DVD player in the USA and are playing DVD movies purchased locally you fill be fine.
Now, let's get to your AVI(Audio-Video-Interleave) problem. Read the manual or look for some special white icons printed on your DVD player itself, specifically that says DIVX. http://www.divx.com/ If it is capable of playing DIVX files, then you can probably play your AVI Clip. I said probably, cause you may need to convert your AVI file to DIVX format AVI file. You can download a limited use program from http://www.divx.com/ and try it.
If that is something not possible then, again, go back to the manual confirm which DVD format it uses. DVD -R or DVD +R. Your computer should have come with a basic DVD making software. Run the software and import the AVI Clip into it. It will prompt you for making a menu similar to the commerical DVDs you may have used. Follow the simple steps and it will burn a DVD that your DVD player can read and play. Try it out and see how it goes. It is not rocket science.
