How do I stop my cat from shredding the furniture?

At petstores you can buy a spray of fragrance that cats don't like and spray it on. We didn't notice the smell and it doesn't stain the furniture.

Plus the cat stopped using the couch as her personal claw sharpener.

But first and formost I would reccomend de-clawing. Atleast on the front claws.

Option 1) Declaw him. A lot of people don't like that idea, but if he's an inside kitty it should be viable.

Option 2) Trim his nails. I would prefer to let a professional groomer or vet do this, as the quick comes down into the claws.

Option 3) There is a product called Soft Paws. Apparently what these are are tips you can put on a kitty's claws so he can't scratch. You'll still want to trim his claws on occasion.

Every time she tries to scratch sth. she must not., grab her gently from the neck, like her mum, say No and put her on a scratching post. It is important to give her the alternative. However, thsi must be repeated consistently every time she tries to scratch the furniture. If she has already learned to shred them, it will be harder.
PS. Don't even consider declawing, or you will have worse troubles (like peeing around, because it is no fun to scratch with amputated fingers). You could try www.softpaws.com though, plastic claw caps,easy to use and effective.

Get her a scratching post (a long and tall one, so she can stretch out her body) and encourage her to scratch it by playing with her around it or hanging toys on it. other than that, you can use a product called SoftClaws, which is a more humane option than declawing. They are rubbery little claw covers that prevent scratched furniture. Also, trim ur cats nails regularly.

When cats start scratching stuff that means they are trimming there nails or loosing the old nail to come off. I have 3 cats, not one has scratched my furniture. I have cat condo's , one in the living room, in the bedroom and one in my office. Go to your local pet store and purchase one, you'll see how much your cat will love it.

when they start scratching your furniture, be like, "NO!!!!" it will scare the crap out of them and they will run away. then, give them a scratching post or some old piece of furniture to scratch, and when they scratch that, pet them and be like, "that's a good little-kitty-kitty yes it is!" and repeat. cats are smart and will realize that if they don't wanna have the crap scared out of them to only scratch what you give them to.

side note: don't declaw your cat! if you are thinking about it, look at your hands. then picture cutting off the entire segment that has your fingernail on it. ouch! yes! declawing a cat is like cutting off your fingertips! it really is the distal ends of the cats phalanges.

Spray bottle with water in it. Every time you see her do it, spray her. Or put clear packing tape on the spots she tries to scratch. Also get a scratch post of some type and sprinkle some catnip on it. Cats hate the smell of oranges so if you have orange peel rub it on the things she is trying to scratch.

Try firmly scold your cat when he/she starts shredding the furniture, then pick him up and bring him somewhere else. If he does it again, keep trying to bring him away and offer him a treat if he follows you.

You can keep your furniture covered with throws. That deters cats. You can also provide something rough for her to scratch.
