ear expanders?????????

i've had an 8mm expander for about a month and lots of my frieds and other people i no have them and they all say its gunna start to smell funny soon when i take it out but i dont want it to none of theres are infected and they wash it everyday and stuff apparently its completely normal but is there anyway i can prevent it?
