I have a friend that has a difficult time knowing between right and wrong. To my friend, any "wrong" act is equally evil. For instance, jaywalking is as bad as tortuing and animal. My friend thinks that if you tell a small white lie, it's just the same as murdering an infant.

What do you think of this person? Are they insane? Or do you think they are evil? What's your honest opinion?

I don't think they are insane or evil. I think they are strongly convicted -which God, Jesus and all the apostles have stated there would be...people who are more sensitive than others.

Somewhere in scripture it does state that no sin is greater than the other (jaywalking vs. lying vs. adultery vs. cruelty, etc.). This isn't to say that all sins are treated equally or come with equal penalties.

Basically the thought behind it is that breaking the law is breaking the law -whether spiritual or earthly. If a guy jaywalks and gets ticketed he no longer has a "clean slate".

He might not pay as high a price for jaywalking as say animal cruelty or murder, but he has still broken the law. If I were to tell a lie, would it matter whether it was a "little white one" or big nasty black one? Essentially no. I would have lied and compromised my character and integrity.

I hope this helps because I know it's a confusing situation to wrap our heads around.

Blessings to you and yours!

Sounds like somebody twisted him up pretty good when he was very young. I've never known anyone like that, but since you say he is your friend he must have some redeeming qualities. I think he'll probably be OK. At least you know he won't even do you a little injury. Unless of course he actually enjoys jaywalking.

a sin is a sin - however murder and lying are extremes much like jaywalking is a crime according to our society its not cruel nor does it hurt a living creature - i think that person took the words a sin is a sin a little toooooo far!!! a small lie is as bad as a big lie - i dont know anyone who would compare it to murdering an innocent baby!!

My honest opinion?

Without knowing too many details, I would say at the least this person is massively under-educated and grossly (probably intentionally) misinformed. I would also be curious to see what kind of clinical diagnoses of the mental and cognitive variates could be given to this person.

I would bet this person is quite detached from reality and would have difficulty functioning in the real world.

I don't think the person is evil, but the idea is quite toxic.

Yes, some people see things as "wrong is wrong" but in reality that's not true.

I had people tell me sin is sin. Yes and cheese is cheese, but you can have a big cheese wheel, a block, or a slice. So to me, a white lie, no, you don't look like you gained weight, is not as bad a killing and raping a girl whose family would be devestated. No. I think anybody who thinks that way lables things as black and white and that's not how the world works.

I think that's really over the top. Sure, its wrong, but its not equal to other evil acts, like murdering an infant.

You're describing a state of innocence, in the Biblical sense of the word. The fallen nature of man is what gives us our sense of right and wrong. Observe young children, if they were any bigger, they'd be dangerous.

Judgement is a curse, as the Bible says, because we can't just chuck it out the window. Innocence is a blessing, as the Bible says, because we can hold it in our arms, without fear.

Your friend seems to have a highly developed code of behavior, without the morality that most people develop.

well we as humans do not think that lying is the same thing as murder but to God it is. There are no greater sins than others. lying, stealing, lusting, murder, rape, greed, pride, ect.. are all the same with God. God has a holy standard, a standard we cannot live up to but thank God that he sent His son into the world to take up our sins and to be the sacrifice so we might have a deep relationship with our Creator again. Paradise lost, Paradise restored

They are using a rule based morality rather than a personal morality. This could be because the challange of distinguishing between black and white in a world of gray is too difficult for them, or it could be that they are searching for control in a world gone mad with desire.

Sin is sin. God looks at it all the same.. He hates it whether it's a lie or murder. And by the way, there is no such thing as a little white lie! All sin will be punished. We don't know how God will handle each sin but He will the way He see's fit.
