It washes off by exfoliating. When you tan, your skin produces melanin, which is what tans your skin. The tan you see is on the top layer of the skin, the epidermis. Whenever you scratch yourself or exfoliate, the epidermis rubs off in a way, getting rid of dead skin cells and leaving newer skin that hasn't been exposed to the sun as much as the layer that you just got rid of, leaving a lighter skin color. So in a way, I guess you can wash your tan away.

She was repeating an often said advertising for tanning salons. There are so many tanning products, (to tan and to untan) that the users of this industry repeat it everywhere they go.
I really do not think you can wash burnt skin away but you can hasten the removal of dead skin later with the use of exfoliants.

self tanning lotions do wash off gradually. the same with the skin renewal process, with this the tan fades in patches the tan does not all fade @ the same rate.
A tan that you got from sunbathing will not wash off as any one knows, the tan gradually slows because of the same method as above the skin renewal process.

yes that's true. going to the tanning beds, it really comes off after a shower. unless your naturally dark it does wear off. just like dying your hair, it washes out also.

Well when you wash you'll peel your skin little by little - especially if you use exfoliating shower gels or loofahs. And your skin will exfoliate naturally day by day - but this doesn't mean that when you apply a little soap it will all go away!
