Hang up, in your room, the outfit that you would like to fit into asap.
Hang, on the fridge, a photo of an overweight you--the worst one you can find--to prevent you from digging in.
Make yourself a chart of what you eat each day. Note the time, what you're doing, how you're feeling, and the calories of the food that you're eating.
Make yourself a list of what you'd like to eat each day (example of healthy):
Breakfast:
Cheerios, any fruit, 1% milk
Mid-morning
Carrot & celery sticks, a couple of crackers, juice
Lunch
Tuna on lettuce & tomatoes with only lemon (no mayo), iced green or herb tea
Mid-afternoon
Non-fat yogurt, juice/iced tea/1%milk
Dinner
BROILED chicken breast, 2 veggies (1 green leafy), tea, juice or 1% milk
Evening
Baked potato (no gravy or butter) OR slice of whole-grain toast, chamomile tea or 1% milk
Most importantly, don't drink any soda--even diet soda gives us that 'beer belly'
Don't eat empty calorie meats like sausage, hot dogs, bologna, salami, pepperoni, etc.
Don't use mayonnaise
Don't eat sugary cereals or sugary anything
Don't fry anything--broil, bake, nuke, b-b-q--just don't fry
Don't eat anything greasy (chips, fries, etc.)

I'll give this a shot. I'm a Type II diabetic just on the edge of being normal. I'm also a 52 yr. old female. which means around that time I get serious chocolate cravings. Me, I've found that if I don't condemn myself and give in to it just a bit I don't feel the guilt, because #1 its my body, I'm the one has to live with it, #2 I know that if I fudge a little here, just back off the f-fries there and the white rice and potatoes over there. We diabetics have to be careful but I'm not giving up my treats for nothing. I also allow myself one huge Starbucks Java Choc Chip Frappacino a month, one Wendy's large frosty a month. I don't fret over the word temptation. I used to drink when I was a lot younger in my 20's but now I can't because of the diab. So its a trade-off, ya know? Also, another thing I try not to do is eat after 3pm because if I don't I'll drop 2 #'s a week. And lay off the sandwich breads. If you do eat at night, eat light, a piece of fruit and wheat crackers or a lean cuisine little meal. If I can do it, you can do it. we can pen-pal if u like and I can encourage you along. I've gone from 220 down to 189 and holding. So I know you can do it. We're all people. We're all human and the little goodies are out there, you just got to choose what's worth keeping for a monthly treat and letting go of another. bplunkett1@yahoo.com

Been there, done that: champion yo-yo dieter who has lost many pounds and gained many many more.
People like us are afraid of failure. How much worse will we feel if we put a lot of effort into a diet, deprive ourselves of many of the things we love, and still don't succeed? Even worse if our friends and family are tuned in and watching what you're doing and we feel like they are just waiting for an opportunity to be critical.
Advice: You have to work on your head (your mind set) before you can successfully work on your waistline. You have to do all the planning necessary, including learning about the foods you should eat (and will eat) to keep your diet well-balanced, and an exercise program. All the experts advise people that this is a decision for a lifestyle change, which is really major when you think about it.
Caution: Don't go for the total deprivation that the above advice-giver is recommending. It's a certain recipe for failure. That's too few calories to keep you satisfied. Much better to eat a little more of the things you like, and do some exercise.
About 20 years ago I lost 54 lbs., but refused to do any real exercise. Since then I have gained more than 100. It really has to be a total lifestyle change to be successful. Best of luck. I encourage you to stick with it.

Temptation.........any temptation, you can let it pass by you when you have
1) predetermined what your response will be, and
2)what your goal is, and
3)can name the reason for your goal.
You can do this when the goal has become YOUR GOAL.
