Does anyone hear their dog sucking in air/coughing at the same time? I was told it was a backwards sneeze but not sure.

Yep, I have 2 chihuahuas and they both do it when they get excited. I read that it can actually scare them, so try to calm them down when they are doing it.

Technically this is called Collapsed Trachea Syndrome and is not all that unusual especially in small dogs. Their trachea partially collapses causing the dog to make a honking or reverse sneezing type of sound. In most dogs this is a mild condition and causes little problems. In rare cases it may require surgery.

My dog does it quite often, ususally in the spring/early summer. It sounds like the dog is trying to hock a loogie. I just stand near him and say bless you. The look on his face is like "what is happening to me". I had one episode go on for almost a minute. He was pretty not happy, but then - as soon as it was over, was right back to his old self.

And it is called a reverse sneeze. If you can, (since they don't do it on command!) video tape it and take it to your vet if you are concerned and want to make sure it is indeed a reverse sneeze.

It is actually called a reverse sneeze and all dogs do it at one time or the other. It is fine, doesn't hurt them at all.

I've heard it called an "inverted snort" but it's the same thing. It's a spasm. It's harmless - just calm the dog with oohs and aahs and it will stop.

It happens to my dogs alot. It does help to calm them down. Often rubbing their throats or blowing into their nose will help stop it.
