No way. There are always alternatives to "diminishing the population." I think it's immoral to kill off any group of people like that.
The world is no where near its capacity right now anyway. I believe there will always be ways to improve the quality of life so the issue wouldn't come up.
You help people by educating them and providing them with the tools for safer sex and child rearing, not by killing them.

absolutely. Laptop J said it best. I read a statistic that by roughly 2050, at current growth trends, the population of the planet will be 15 billion! Education is key, however one must look at where this growth is coming from. In western nations (with the exception of the U.S.), population is either leveling off or waning. If we are to look at, say, India, Holy crap! It's the same for many other developing countries (India is developed, to a point). The problem lies not just with religious issues, but with social ones. Because there is no social security, pension, etc. it is up to the children to look after the elderly. In order to ensure that you are taken care of , you have lots of children! With the increase in available medicine (though death rates are still large) child mortality has gone down, leading more and more children to survive into adulthood and repeat the cycle. It's probably inevitable that more and more conflicts will arise as shortages of resources become greater. It will only add fire to "end times" prophecies.... Maybe Soylent Green isn't so far off... or maybe Logan's Run?

Evolution and survival of the fittest (natural selection is basically the same theory, but implies an element of choice) does it for us, so there's no human action to support/not support: the stupid and ill-equipped (in senses of genetics) members of the population go because they're a lot more likely to lead themselves to their own death.
That benefits the remaining people, I think; if all those who thought it was a good idea to run across busy roads were killed, then all the remaining safe drivers would no longer have to fear an idiot coming through their windshield and hurting them.
Those who are particularly susceptible to certain diseases will die if an outbreak occurs, leaving only the members who have a stronger resistance to it to reproduce, making our species stronger in just a generation or two. Mutations: evolution sped up.

I think people need to have less children worldwide. One or two at the most. But population control is already at work in the developing world, where AIDS, TB, and other infectious diseases are killing millions. Developed nations need to do what it takes to stop this, but poor families aren't doing anybody any favors by continuing to pop out kids every year.

Diminishing the population - how? Firing squads? Forced abortions? No!
Diminishing by government incentives for small family sizes and increased birth control education for ALL countries, free condoms and pills? Yes

I don't know about other Atheists, but I'm in favour of population control. I'm not sure how something like that could be enforced, though. Some sort of "you-have-too-many-kids" tax perhaps? It's impractical.

Population education to start with. As it stands now, the human condition doesn't scale at all. We're already over heating the planet, there's mass starvation, and we're killing each other over land. If we don't do something soon, the planet and realities of life will do it for us.

I support the encouragement and facilitation of *voluntary* birth control measures. I would not support mandatory birth control, or population reduction by killing people or allowing preventable deaths.

I changed my mind. Yes, I do support population control (depopulation). Mother nature is a starter. She seems to strike the right areas.

The world is getting over populated. Ignorance is running wild, why just today on answers someone couldn't spell the word diminish.
