My fiance and I have been together for a while now and are ready to settle down. However, there's a problem. Went don't have alot of money and I was wondering if anyone knew if the military (He's in national guards) gives money to families in the service for living expensives. Also if they do, do you have to pay this money back to them? Thanks!

I just read that you have to be active in order to receive money for funding. He isn't...what can we do?

go Active Duty.
until you are married, he won't qualify anyway. Basic Allowance for housing is based on paygrade and duty station and is only given to those on Active Duty or Reserves and Guard activated for more than 30 days/

If your fiance' is on active duty he will receive a BAQ (Basic Allowance for Quarters), a "housing allowance". He will also recieve, in most areas, a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) along with BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistance), food money. These are all paid to people WITH dependents unless they live in base housing, then the BAQ is stopped. The people without dependents earn the same monies but, because they are crammed into a barracks, they don't get any of it.

You only get money for housing if he is active duty. This is called BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) and it is not paid back. If you live near a base and the housing is privately operated, sometimes they will open up units to National Guard members.

However, if he is active duty and they find a government owned housing or government leased housing situation for you, they will give you the house and take back the BAH. If you get lucky, On Post Housing can be a good thing....But, you do get the luck of the draw.

You guys need to be married for him to get BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) unless he is at least an E5 or above and has been approved to receive it by his chain of command and also to live off base AND he has been activated. If he is just doing the one weekend a month thing, he will get paid accordingly and that is it no regular housing allowance, just pay to do his drill. If he has been activated than he needs to be approved to live off base if he is an E5 and above or you two need to be married and approved to live off base. Nothing gets paid just because you are engaged. The Army is very strict about housing pay and who can get it since they like to keep their base housing 100% occupied.

I am in the Air Force and as for being a male soon to be married, I would advise you to seek employment just in my opinion. Every little bit would help and it would be less stressful for your husband than have to worry about if the salary is going to cut it month by month. It would be a much happier home as well. =) I would recommend off base housing (apt.) as VM said above since you guys are married because you can also reap from the benefits.

There is a dependent housing allowance but applies only if you are
married and on active duty. It is part of their pay and there is no need to pay it back.
Otherwise, no.
